The book is a short read, I finished it in an hour, but I did set aside some exciting reads because it was a really compelling book. It's a hard-felt, no-fluff, true story with the author just telling us the rise of his corporate job and the decline of his health and happiness AT THE SAME TIME. I happen to have LIVED THAT LIFE myself. I knew the emotions he was referring to, the meaningless meetings, the long business trips, the lonely hotel rooms, the missing of birthday and anniversary of your family .... the sacrifices, ALL FOR WHAT? I left a Fortune 100 career behind and Ralph a rising corporate career in LA and we are both in a very happy place now as entrepreneurs. So I could relate to this story 100%.
But if I had read this story when I was still trapped in those corporate chains, then I would have found it even more useful, and that's why I want you to pick this up if you are a cubicle slave, and feel totally trapped. Dreams DO come true and every single one of us - I believe - has a business inside us. Imagine if you took some action and followed this inspiration.
Yes, there is so much life after corporate, I thank God every day that I left that job behind, and now, 18 months later, I hired my husband away from the same company to run our business. You will find your path and figure it out so if you are miserable, get out. Get out now! Because you can't get back the years of your life.
Excellent story so thank you Mr. Quintero!
The theme that resonated so closely for me throughout 'Life After Corporate: My Personal Journey from the C-Suite to the E-Suite' can be defined in a word - guilt. In a corporate setting, we're told to sacrifice everything for the business, from our health and mental well-being to our own sense of purpose. And when we take vacation time that we've earned? Or we put in consecutive 60+ hour weeks and want a day off? We're made to feel guilty about that, too.
What a relief it was to hear that it isn't just your run-of-the-mill workers who feel soul-sapped by 'the machine,' asking 'is this really how it's supposed to be?' It's C-level executives, too. But rather than sit by and let his life continue to unravel, Ralph Quintero bucked the system by stepping away, then worked hard enough to justify it.
In return, he not only attained financial security - albeit, after working tirelessly to pay his dues - but did it on his terms while maintaining a meaningful relationship with his family.
I'm approaching the 'other side' of the corporate life and while it presents its challenges, it's been completely worth it. Ralph's book will resonate with you if you've already made the move, or have been itching to take the plunge. It's $2.99, it's uplifting, and you'll be done in under an hour. Totally worth the read.
I love you statement where Ralph said, "I have always had a big vision and my vision at that very moment, as I walked in those doors, was that I was going to run that place one day." lol! I am the same way at every job. He had an expressive/driver temperamental personality type. We tend to want to conquer the world! lol! I am loving this book!
There are a lot of good family lessons and the greatest lesson of the book was just being true to yourself and your own vision. That is what got me, when he turned down the first client of his new business because they were asking him to step out of his expertise. Sometimes I find myself doing that. That just set it in stone to stop doing that. Great read!
