Connor Price has seen his fair share of violence and mayhem; being a vampire hunter in Detroit, it kind of comes with the territory. He met his boyfriend while staking a bloodsucker, his best friend Terra is a fellow hunter, and when he's not engaging in hand-to-hand combat with monsters he's usually bragging about a recent kill (in between swallows of Miller Lite and greasy food).

In a harrowing tale of sex, blood and sadism, Connor finds himself in the spotlight of his fanged foes. Though he knows he’s in for the fight of his life, he’s no amateur and he’s not afraid. With the strength of determination, defiance and a smart mouth he descends into the vampires’ world. Along the way he discovers that all leeches aren’t the same, and that some of them crave more than just his blood.

Part smut, part snuff, all story. Life After Last Breath toes the line between a raunchy nightstand novel and a plot so poignant that your grandma might read it (mine did).

*Life After Last Breath is written in short chapters that keep you going well into the night. It is recommended for a mature audience and carries a trigger warning, as it contains scenes of explicit violence, sex, and noncon situations.

Cayla was born in 1990 in Metro Detroit where she currently lives (and will probably die). She and her husband Mike reside in a small apartment without pets or kids (because they still have a couple more years of partying left, damn it).

She is a fan of horror, anything with queer themes, violence and drama, sex, and all things that go bump in the night. She predominantly writes erotica, and there's a good chance there will be at least one vampire in the story.

She worked on various editions of Life After Last Breath: an erotic tale of monsters, for the upwards of fifteen years before finally publishing it in 2018. While working on the sequel to LALB she was struck by writer's block and decided to write a prequel, resulting in the publication of Randy & The Oyster Thief: an unsettling novella, in early 2019.

The Licking Zombie series came as a result of joking conversations between Cayla and Mike, "What if the zombies don't want to eat your brains, they just want to lick you?!", and grew more serious with time. We don't know what else to say about that.

Metro Detroit is the perfect setting for this erotic thriller. The decaying landscape and abandoned buildings provide endless opportunities to feed on victims who will not be missed and for those who hunt the monsters to make their mark. Some eat only to quench their hunger, while others crave the pain and fear they can inflict. The antagonists take pleasure in torturing their captives, both physically and sexually, pushing them to the limit of their endurance. This novel showcases what it means to be monster and human, and the spectrum that exists between.

Once I started I reading I couldn’t put it down. I loved the quick pace of the plot and the snappy dialogue. Plenty of noncon situations that are very arousing and very graphic, I was able to really get into the mind of both the perpetrators and the victims. I would definitely recommend this book.

A different twist on the old vampire saga. Enjoyed reading the different interactions of the various characters. Would recommend this story to all my friends and family.

I couldn't finish the book. It was just too gratuitous at times. I like dark stories, and I like to hate a good villain, but after one particularly gratuitous death, once my anger cooled and I was just left kind of numb. There really wasn't anything I think that could top that on the protagonist-suffering scale and there was still a large amount of book left. Things didn't look like they would be turning around for awhile yet, and I just wasn't interested in what new tortures our antagonists would come up with for him in the meantime.

This Book is an amazing read. The city of Detroit and its crumbling infrastructure is very true to life. The detail to the characters, their lives and how they live is so well written you will go through many different emotions. Even ones that you may not have excepted. I could barley put it down. I am very much looking for to the sequel, possibly a series.

This aurther has an amazing gift and I hope will continue to surprise us with more!

You probably should not read this book if you are sensitive to violence or rape. I realize these things are erotic for some readers, but they aren't for others. For this reason, I have mixed feelings about recommending this book. I did not finish reading this book.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

I gobbled this up and was gasping for more. It's graphic. It hooked me right in, and each chapter is so easily digestible that I had to have another right away. I love the villain, Randall Sullivan, waaay more than I should probably admit. It's dark and gritty, sexy, and at times cringeworthy in the tangible way that you always wish a book can make you feel. If you like vampire horror, this is for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good first half, dropped the ball in the second half
Reviewed in Germany on August 28, 2019
Reading the first half of this book, I was thinking I'd give it four stars. It started strong, I enjoyed the slang, the chapter titles were smart and the plot had a good pace, with few grammatical errors. There is sex, rape, and torture, and the whole thing is appropriately disturbing and uncomfortable, but you feel that it all serves the cause of illustrating the bad guy's sick, sadistic nature. All is well up to now. Not a literary masterpiece, but entertaining and a definite four-star, for its genre. And then something went terribly wrong. It's as if one writer gave up and another person picked up and tried to finish.

-ATTENTION, SPOILERS-
At some point the vampire hunter protagonist is turned into a vampire against his will. The author tries to impart some sense of urgency, which I didn't really feel: why is the protagonist so keen on saving the hunters' community, since every single one of the people he cared about has been killed off by the author? The reader is unfortunately left with nobody to care about. It is also not explained and doesn't make much sense why the arch-villainous vampire takes the punishment for our protagonist, whom he previously tortured, and who he didn't seem to care about. The plot meanders through unnecessary flashbacks, which seem hastily written, don't feel organically embedded within the rest of the text, and might be more appropriate in a sequel. The grammatical errors multiply, and at some point we even have to read about how an old vampire's wife was taking prenatal vitamins in the year 1744.

In the end, some tepid drama is conjured almost out of thin air. The drama is hastily resolved by conjuring a whole different kind of magic which is hastily introduced. This would have been enough material for two more books, had it been properly introduced, developed, built on, but many bits and pieces are thrown and loosely stitched together.

I suppose the author wanted to leave us with a promise of revenge that might drive us to buy the next book, but by this point I'm really not interested in it anymore. I would be, if there was a guarantee that the second book would be like the first half of the first book.

I'll still give it three stars because of the very entertaining first half, and I hope the author leans to pace herself and properly develop her world, more slowly, and paying a little more attention to grammar.
