Alcibiades is probably the most colorful character in history...anybody's history. His life story reads like a novel that seems too far out to be true, but it is true to ancient Athens' regret. Perhaps as interesting as the man's biography is the political process in Athens that permitted his ruinous excesses and the the willingness of enemy states to grant him "citizenship" in exchange for his strategic brilliance. Entertaining as well as educational.

After reading many reports on this Greek one might get the impression he was a completely traitorous person with no moral principles whatsoever. Benson provides a view of Alcibiades that probably is not appreciated by those historians who would like to consier him as the consumate traitor. The fact that Athens sought and did try him for a crime he did not commit and then used him when it was to their benefit gives a fresh new view of this ancient Greek.

I'd read a book on Alcidiades while in college and have been trying to find something similar since then. He was a very interesting individual and I enjoyed the read.
