Grade 6-10-An introduction to the Yanomami society of the Amazon basin. Kallen describes the tribe's traditional way of life, their food sources, shelter, gender roles, and spiritual beliefs. He provides an overview of their encounters with outsiders from the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century to more recent and extensive incursions by rubber tappers and gold miners and stresses the harmful impact of disease and pollution resulting from these meetings. Like many books about the rain forest, this one notes the rapid destruction of irreplaceable resources, including plant species that might supply new medicines. Finally, as governments, businesses, and environmentalists debate, Kallen speculates on the fate of the Yanomami and their land. The small black-and-white photos are dark and lack detail. The text, while adequate for reports, will not captivate readers, and teachers may cringe at some of the grammatical mistakes. An annotated list for further reading notes Web sites, books, and articles.
