The first 3 books, I gave 3 stars. I don't really know why. They are dark, dark dark. I don't want to like them, but I do. I hate Devin, with a passion. I hate him more than I have ever hated a man in any book I have ever read. I do not think there are any redeeming qualities, and I hope there is no plan to make him better. There is no way to redeem him.
What I love: Anna. She is amazing, so sweet, despite everything that has happen to her All along she has exhibited an inner strength that is amazing. Terrible things happen to her, but she always seems to bounce back and somehow forgives Devin. Well maybe not forgive, but she accepts her life. She lost Ben, then she looses Alex, then her friends start moving away and she really has no one left. Devin banished Wilhelm and Kurt in a truly terrifying exhibit of strength and brutality. She is just about broken and desperate in this book. I have never cried so much in a book. I felt like I was crying all the time while reading. Even tho her relationship with Peter was fake and approved by Devin, they came to an understanding and she actually is happy and enjoying their life together. Everything is going great and then he has to go back to Russia when his Grandfather dies. When that happens, he becomes an elder son and has responsibilities in Russia. Anna attends the funeral in Russia with Devin. While there, she sees Wilhelm and Kurt and Wilhelm confronts Devin in front of all the other Elders about not being able to see Anna. So Anna is allowed to spend some time with them in Germany and she is so happy. These brief moments of her happiness is so worth all the terrible things that Devin does to her. When she comes back from Germany, Devin makes her move in with him. His wife is gone, not really sure what happen to her.
The last part of the book is full of horrible things that he does to Anna. So many things and she has nowhere else to go and no hope for a different life. Devin tries briefly to be nice, but he can't help himself, he only knows how to abuse and torture her. Now, the immortal, Kavah also brutalizes her on a daily basis. She is still allowed to dance and that is the only time she is happy and feels alive. She is a shell of herself and all her friends are worried about her.
She still sees Alex in her dreams and he keeps saying he is coming back for her. But she doesn't understand how that can happen. She still misses him so much and I think that is what is most heartbreaking for me, her grief over Alex. It has been a little over 3 years and the sadness and grief have never gone away.
Throughout the book, you get little snippets of conversation between unknown people(some of them are her friends) that are concerned for her and trying to make a plan to rescue her. But you fear that it will never happen. In book 3 you learn that she can get pregnant. The pregnancy happens with Kavah' s help and is another way for Devin to abuse her. Her baby is created to give him more power.
When she goes to Russia, she meets other elder mistresses. They are curious by her and she is curious about them. They don't understand why she is so emotional because apparently half immortal/elder mistresses don't feel emotions or love. I don't really understand the elder mistresses myself. Anna doesn't feel like she fits in with them, mostly because Devin made her a sex slave and they are supposed to be respected and clearly Anna is not respected by any of the men in Devin' s brotherhood. They are supposed to be respected, but yet they are forced to have sex. I don't really understand that. I don't understand how they are born, who they are born to and how and where they are raised. I wonder what her life would have been like if her parents had not died. I am guessing that most immortals don't get married. I am hoping that these questions will be answered in book 5. With this secret brotherhood and their involvement and power in government. It makes me wonder if there are any normal relationships. So much sex and torture, the men have lost their minds and have no self control. And it seems like it just will get worse with the next generation. They have no one teaching them how to treat a woman. Devin's son, Tyler is as bad, if not maybe a little worse than Devin. He just doesn't even want to try to be nice to Anna. I do like Tommy, tho. He seems to really care about Anna.
Do the wives know about the brotherhood, the Manors and what the men do? Do they know about the sex slaves? Why is no one getting any diseases?
Read this book. The writing is very good and the characters are well developed. But you should only read this after reading the previous 3 books.
I still can't help but wonder if Alex is really alive or not I'd like to assume he is but it's definitely dragging out. I want to see Anna become a strong half immortal that she has the ability to be. Devin's demise has to happen in book 5 and hopefully Alex will be brought back to his wife. When I read these books I cannot help but think of the songs "Pain" by Three Days Grace or Pantera's "This Love" they seem highly appropriate for the books soundtrack music.
As always great writing by Marissa I will be stalking her Facebook page for the release of #5 I hope it's at least a 1000 pages long as there's a lot to tie up!
