Editorial Reviews

Review

"Submitting to the order God has in mind for us figures heavily in this sweetly narrated lesson on how to handle interruptions in the ideal life we make for ourselves. The author, who has written other spiritual guides, is a wife, mother, broadcaster, and minister who uses biblical stories, especially that of the prophet Jonah, to show how unexpected setbacks are God's way of redirecting us toward a destiny that is more suited to our true nature--and His will. Though many of these parables and lessons could drift into sentimentality, Robin Ray Eller's narration elevates them into the realm of memorable inspiration. Even with her youthful speaking voice, she makes a mature and appealing case for the author's message."

Unexpected interruptions in life and schedules...truly the story of my life.

In writing Life Interrupted: Navigating the Unexpected, Priscilla Shirer has practically written much of the story of my life. And she has never even met me! How is this?! Apparently my life situations and struggles are not quite as unique as I once thought. What a comforting realization.

Of all of the books I have read in the past few months, I would say this one speaks most specifically to me. As a matter of fact, I believe that you may discover the same for yourself if you so choose to venture into the waters of Jonah's story as told by Priscilla.

Jonah's story may be a bit familiar to most who have read the Bible or even heard Bible stories throughout their life. However, I have never read nor thought of Jonah's story in quite the way Priscilla Shirer presents it in Life Interrupted. For probably the first time ever, I actually found myself identifying with Jonah rather than judging him.

Have unexpected, even unwanted interruptions come your way causing your life course to be frustratingly altered?

Have you had a very large virtual fish swallow you in order to force you back on a path or mission you were trying to avoid and even run from?

Then I share with you something Priscilla says on this matter,
"...No matter how remote and relaxing, nothing fills the void of the abandoned purpose. Nothing feels the same anymore when you're running from God."

Have you made a mess of your life in the past?

Then, I echo a quote Priscilla shares by a lady named Carol Kent when she says,
"My mess has become my greatest message.

I have only just completed week one in this study and find myself actually looking forward to reading it. I use blueletterbible.org to look up the scripture passages as it saves time. I find that this study is easily applied to daily life as a woman challenged by the pace of today's world and someone sandwiched between the needs of the elderly and the needs of the very young. I am a professional christian counselor who follows a biblical model for healing. I have a Master's Degree but I do not desire yet another exhausting woman's bible study that could require hours of work on my part. We are also watching the videos that come with this study. Twelve woman's groups meet in our sanctuary every Wednesday. Good study so far! Workbook format.

Priscilla is one of my favorite speakers! Her book, Life Interrupted, did not disappoint and actually spoke to the deepest parts of my heart! I love her take on the story of Jonah. She brought such insight that I had never thought of.

We are thrown all sorts of curve balls in our lives - things we never expected or wanted to happen. But, Romans 8:28 tells us that all things work for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose. This has reminded me and challenged me to see the unexpected as an opportunity.

Wow!! I have been reading book after book by Priscilla Shirer and let me tell you that this God chick is on fire! Every single book I pick up and close the last page and have gained a library of wisdom to carry in my heart.

She's honest. She's transparent and I absolutely love that about her. Priscilla writes like she is that girl next door you could share coffee with and feel completely comfortable with. The girl who can relate and so wants you to soar high with a Jesus life.

In this selection she brings us to travel along with Jonah. She not only shares the Book of Jonah, but she makes it personal. I love the way she pens from her heart. Her words flow. It makes sense. She writes it in a way that I have yet to see in another writer.

"Every interruption is a divine intervention."

"When we follow God through our interruptions, when we back away from the immediate shock to realize there's more to this issue than meets the eye, we become people who can say, "We're not sure what our next assignment will be, but we only want to be where God wants us to be.""

"We've all got a Nineveh of our own."

"We'll look up one day and be completely shocked to find ourselves face-to-face with the one thing we thought we'd never want and realize it's not so bad after all."

"What if we knew this interrupted life was less about the problem and more about the process? What if we knew this roadblock or aggravation hadn't caught God by surprise even if it's come as a shock to us? What if we knew that the direction He was taking us provided opportunities we'd always dreamed about, even if they didn't look exactly the way we thought they would?

I had heard so many great things about Shirer and this book, so I splurged and bought it. It started out wonderful, but then in the middle it seemed to just be repeating everything it had already said. So I still think it's a positive book, but it almost seemed like there was a word limit so she kept repeating herself to fill the spaces maybe?
Very good, true stuff in that book though!
