Editorial Reviews

Legendary American singer and pianist Leon Russell has entertained the world for five decades, getting his start as an in-demand Wrecking Crew session player and playing on hundreds of hit records before he began releasing his own albums in 1967. Leon Russell's latest studio album, titled Life Journey, will be released on April 1, 2014. This 12-track album features newly-written, original songs and Russell's turns on classics that resonate with the two-time GRAMMY® winner as important to his musical trajectory. The album is produced by Tommy LiPuma and executive produced by Elton John, with whom Russell most recently collaborated for 2010's critically acclaimed album, The Union.

On Life Journey, Russell celebrates the songs of 10 other writers, infusing them with the vibrant bounce and spirit that has long been his signature. Russell opens the album with Robert Johnson's 'Come On In My Kitchen', leading a tour of his majestic musical house that continues with Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell's 'Georgia On My Mind', Haven Gillespie and Beasley Smith's 'That Lucky Old Sun', John Davenport and Eddie Cooley's 'Fever', Mike Reid's 'Think Of Me', Duke Ellington and Paul Francis Webster's 'I Got It Bad & That Ain't Good', Herb Magidson and Allie Wrubel's 'The Masquerade Is Over' (featuring a lush orchestral arrangement, a wistful glance back to Russell's own 'This Masquerade'), Paul Anka's 'I Really Miss You', Billy Joel's 'New York State Of Mind', and Johnny Fuller, Robert L. Geddins, and David Rosenbaum's 'Fool's Paradise'. With Life Journey, Leon Russell reminisces with some of the musical touchstones that have inspired him, while bringing forth new songs of his own, for an album that looks back with the love, loss, joy, and peace that's collected during a life well lived. How fortunate the world is for Leon Russell to share his life and time with us in song, all these years.

The long awaited "Life Journey " is here and well worth the wait. I find myself searching for the right words, to express my complete joy with this offering. Leon Russell reaches the highest of high, with some wonderful songs, and exciting arrangements. Russell hits the piano like he has always has done, and takes the listener on a great journey. I have been a long time fan of his music, like so many others. Leon hits the spot light, with the first song to the last.
"Come On In My Kitchen" is a excellent song to open the record- a blues number that Leon grabs your attention with, and takes the song to that special place. "Big Lip" is a fun song that he recorded on a record maybe 10 years ago, and i always have enjoyed this blues song as well.
"Georgia On My Mind: what a great song for Russell to feature on this special recording. I have heard Leon sing this in concert for the last 5 years or so, very happy he included the song here. "That Lucky Old Sun" what a classic song, This is tailored made
for Russell.
"Fever" never a favorite song of mine- but the arrangements, and Leon on piano just likely will change my mind.
"I'm Afraid The Masquerade Is Over" what a excellent song. Of course my mind goes back to "This Masquerade" Leon classic song. Here he explore some wonderful lyric, and the songs just takes you away. I like the phrasing, could it be a coincidence that
Russell selected this song- probably not.
"New York State Of Mind" really like this song, like so many others. Billy Joel must have a big smile on his face, Russell makes it
his own. A very intimate version of a song covered by so many other artist. Leon voice is perfect for the arrangement.

His rendition of Georgia on My Mind is, now, my favorite. Sorry, Willie, you have been usurped. I preordered this CD. I love all things Leon, and I am not disappointed. Oklahoma twang with a Nola raunchiness in the tempo...perfect... Buy this. See him if you are able. And, a message to Mr. Russell...

Thank you, Leon. Thanks for walking with me through the darkness and the light.

It almost sounds like Leon plans to end his recording career but only time will tell and with his latest album he is making sure that if it is the end that he ends it on a high note for sure. This latest project is right up there with everything else he has done as far as songs and production. Though I feel Leon has done a great job with every track, I have to say that my favorites are the two songs he wrote himself, "Big Lips" and "Down In Dixieland". This album comes complete with some of that old time Leon Russell gospel soundin' shoutin' and howlin' and screamin' and hollarin' that I use to love to hear him do. Thank you Leon for this latest recording and all the albums you have ever put out. You deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for more than just being a sideman, but for the artist you are!!!!

And bless Elton John too, for continuing to promote/support the great Leon Russell...and this may be the best album Leon's ever done.

Then, if you're ready to journey with Leon, here's my suggestion: a) pour some good bourbon (or scotch, if you have to) into a glass; b) tell anyone around to go away; c) put on head/ear phones if you have 'em; d) turn the lights down or off; and e) let 'er rip.

Damn, this is amazing music from an amazing singer. Haven't spent money this well in a long time!

This is an excellent album. A thoroughly enjoyable listen from an American music icon who still makes ALBUMs. The track order is Leon's thoughtful expression of his life journey, his influences and his creative progression through the years. Every song is perfectly Leon. Sure he's older, and of course his voice has changed some, but it is distinctly him, a refined Leon, and because of that there is never a dull moment on the album (the screams during Fever and the bawdiness of the original composition Big Lips are a hoot). However, this is a bittersweet offering because, as Leon admits in the liner notes, it's getting near the end of both career and life. So, a slight melancholy breeze blows through the album, but rather than stain and ruin the experience, it adds depth and complexity. 'Life Journey' feels like a good book; it's a privilege to be engaged in it, to be listening to it..

Tulsa treasured icon, Leon Russell certainly takes us all on a Life Journey with this new and highly anticipated album. The tracks span the ages, genres and the many faces of Leon. Each and every song is a true musical gift. Leon's voice is strong and vibrant and his piano and keys playing is as superb as ever and then some. Many awesome supporting musicians including former Leon Russell Band guitar player, Chris Simmons, makes this album a must for any Leon fan or newbie. I remember when Leon was once a fixture in Tulsa, driving his car around, eating at local restaurants and clubs and showing up at impromptu gigs and sitting in with other local talent. Those were memorable days. Life Journey relives some of that time. I have been a Leon fan for over 45 years and have seen him perform too many times to count...but I could probably tell you about every one of them! It has been a Life Journey and awesome musical ride with the Master of Space and Time. I wish him more wonderful years filled with happiness, health and beautiful music. This album was released on Leon's 72nd birthday. Invest in this piece of musical history, you won't be disappointed.
