I bought this because I liked the introduction, which was very evocative, in typical Lucado style. You should be aware, however, that if you are looking for a study of the WHOLE book of John, this is not that book! For example, it completely skips John chapter 3; you know, the one with the strangely familiar verse seen at sports events everywhere.

We'll probably use it mostly for the vignettes; In fact, I read the introduction aloud at our first meeting. But we'll use something else to walk us through the book.

I purchased this for use in my bible study group. We love it. The chapters are short and to the point and give you a lot to think about and aprovide for a lot of really good discussion. I highly recommend this book, as well as any books in this series.

As many have stated previously, this is a good study for those wanting an overview to John. As it was recommended by our pastor's wife and because I highly regard Max Lucado, I thought it would be a good study for our Growth Group. After completing it, I feel it skips over some of the most important theology given in the Gospels - life saving theology at that. So now we are in recap mode and I am trying to go back and fill in the important stuff that's missing - and it's quite a bit. I knew going in it wasn't a line by line study but I didn't realize the extent of what the study was missing! Notably it's missing John 5 - The Authority of the Son, John 6 - Jesus Walks on Water/The Bread of Life, John 7 - Division of Who Jesus Is, John 8 - Dispute Over Jesus' Testimony/Who He Says He Is, John 9 - Spiritual Blindness, John 10 - The Good Shepherd (THIS IS IMPORTANT STUFF!), John 14, 15 and 16 (The Way to the Father, The Vine and the Branches, What Will Happen to Disciples), John 18/19. Keeping in mind John is written for new believers and non-believers and if they don't have a basic foundation in John, the rest of the Bible may not resonate with them. Would recommend someone wanting to go deeper look into the Life Change Series.

The Gospel of John is where all newly Born Again Christians should start. After one has Mastered John, then Matthew should be next. The two are totally opposite each other, but each Gospel has a purpose. It is for the individual to find out what that is. JESUS says we have to work out our own salvation and each one of the Gospels helps to do this. If one wants to know GOD, then John is the place to start. The Holy Spirit will lead you on to the next book to read. Amen!

I am using Max Lucado studies of the four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, as a guide for my Christcare group. For the most part, the scriptures he highlights are very significant for our study. The only reservation I have is that the questions he uses as to emphasize the points of the verses are often not challenging. I often take the conversation into thoughtful discussions which are based on other studies.

This is definitely for beginners. Nothing in this book gave me new thoughts/ideas which I hadn't already pondered. I think it would be great for someone new to Christianity or new to studying the bible... Maybe for youth?

I just finished this Bible study, and I cannot tell you how much my life has been blessed by it. Each lesson has the same sections: Reflection, Situation, Observation, Exploration, Inspiration, Reaction, Life Lessons, Devotion, and Journal. Reflection sections get you to connect your life with something in the lesson. Situation sections give background info. Observation sections is the actual Scripture readings, and Max includes both the NCV and NKJV in each lesson. Exploration sections dive deep into the verses with thought-provoking questions and plenty of space to write the answers. Inspiration sections include excerpts from Max's other books that go with that lesson (loved these parts!). Reaction sections connect the Scriptures to your life. Life Lessons sections wrap up the lesson and give practical ways to incorporate the chosen Scriptures into your life- hence the "Life Lessons" title of the book.Devotion is a prayer and additional Scriptures that pertain to the lesson. Max chose specific stories about Jesus so that we could incorporate Jesus' teachings in our own lives. Extremely powerful, extremely effective. You will not study every verse of the book of John in this study. However, if you use a Life Application Bible along with these Life Lesson studies, you can read each verse on your own and use the Life Application commentary to deepen your study. I can't wait to start the next one!

It's tough to select just a dozen stories from John's gospel and develop a Bible study on it. But Max does a really good job of opening up our eyes to see Jesus clearly for who he is. The content is pretty light, but it get's the conversations started and you can certainly build from there.
