His writing is incredibly engaging and relatable, starting with the extended metaphor of life as a Hollywood sitcom. I felt like he was just sitting on the couch with me telling his story. I felt so connected with him. The written word is like magic in that it lets you see into someone else’s thoughts and hopes and dreams, their insecurities and fears and failures.
In a world where we spend our time cultivating the best version of ourselves on social media, it’s refreshing to be able to hear someone speak honestly about what they consider their worst failures.
MJ says it best himself:
“Although I felt for a long time that my struggles were singular and my mistakes were one of a kind, I’ve realized more and more that my failures connect me with people more than they divide… When we start being real and honest with ourselves, people notice, and we start making an impact on those around us.”
I’m grateful MJ chose to share his story as a way to uplift those around him. I loved this book and I’m sure you will too.
Even though I am, on the surface, very different from MJ, and the events discussed are both tragic and extreme, they simultaneously feel completely relatable. It often feels like the words on the page are things I've thought myself. He demonstrates how, though everyone has a unique experience on their journey through life, we're truly not all that different. Everyone certainly has their own challenges, their own demons, their own tragedies.
MJ's story shows that there is always hope on the other side; That, by constantly pushing forward, accepting help when it presents itself, and occasionally placing ourselves outside our comfort zone, we can keep those tragedies from defining us and learn to define ourselves.
I truly feel like I know MJ as well as I know my closest friends. I've binge-watched all of "The MJ Show," and I can't wait to find out what happens next!
This book is a very enjoyable, amusing, entertaining, and overall just a fun read. His writing style seems so effortless and personal that it seems as though you are just hanging out in a pub talking over a few pints late into the night.
It may have helped that I drew many parallels with his anecdotes, whether from my life or that of lifelong friends.
I also loved the realness and local references.
My only complaint is that I want more. I’m already imagining a travel journal/guide book, a book detailing your teen years, and much more. Bravo on your first book and I am looking forward to many more!
