Editorial Reviews

Life Like is Joan of Arc distilled down to/embracing its rock essence. Gone from the band's music (for now) are the electronics and layers upon layers of tracks. Gone from their liner notes are an extensive list of musicians and instruments. Instead, Life Like is the result of four men adhering to Thoreau's famous principle, "Simplify, simplify, simplify!" Life Like is the first Joan of Arc to feature Victor Villarreal (Cap'n Jazz, Owls) as a member. The album was recorded at Chicago's Electrical Audio with engineer Steve Albini.

Format: Audio CD
Life Like opens with a bang- bursts of jingling guitars alternating between clean and distorted jamming with drums erupting like fireworks. Tim comes in around the 7 minute mark and rounds it out nicely, adding that familiar JOA vocal flavor- sing-talking leading to his signature howling and screeching in the moonlight kind of thing. Steve Albini also adds his touch to the sound- a raw, open-room kind of feel. This idea sums up the rest of the album as well.

For JOA followers, or those who have heard some of the other experiments Tim and crew have released over the last 18 years or so- this output is to the point- intricate, twinkling guitars, jagged melodies with Tim's softness and screeching atop. From a consistency standpoint, I'd compare this to Boo Human, Eventually at All Once, So Much Staying Alive and the Intelligent Design Of (surprisingly cohesive and awesome for an unreleased collection of JOA). Also kind of cool is the first time addition of Victor Villarreal (former guitarist of the great Cap'n Jazz).

If you are familiar with the world that is JOA, the music is what you'd expect if you've heard any of the above mentioned albums. If you are new to the game, play the MP3 samples here- should give you a good idea of the musical taste and Tim's vocals- which range from soft and rather pleasant to intentionally seeming off-key to a unique screech/howl topped with the signature "voice crack" at times (perhaps an acquired taste). His quirky lyrics are the perfect fit for such a vocal style.

The album does go by pretty quickly, but the fact that it's to the point is kind of nice. But I wouldn't have complained if they added a few more tracks of the same overall nature. Regardless, this is a good addition to the collection.
