So let’s get into Jen’s book and her story a bit. Jen and Greg seemed to be by most accounts your average American couple running the rat race in Dallas, Texas. After years of being treated sub-par by their employers and vast amounts of work-related stress taking its toll on their health, especially Greg’s, they decided for the benefit of their sanity and future happiness to give it all up and move to Costa Rica. Now, this might be a crazy thought to most people, but actually more and more people are turning to this “out of the box” lifestyle. What may seem as frightening to most people, ended up being the best possible move Jen and Greg could have made, and their lives are now forever enriched for it. Their story takes you through their struggles at first, their change of lifestyle and a substantial loss of income, but ultimately they come out on top and find tremendous self-fulfilling success.
“Out of the box” isn’t just Jen and Greg’s story though. Throughout much of the book Jen chronicles the life changing growth of many of the good friends she and Greg met along the way through their journey. There are Jenn and Matt originally from New England who also shares their inspirational story. A photographer named John, who knows how to get things done. Bicyclist Jen and Dave and their pup Sora, all three are on their life’s adventure traveling through Europe and other parts of the world. And, Samantha and Yeison now living in Costa Rica but Samantha is from Washington State. All of these people, and many more couples I haven’t mentioned here, share with you their powerful stories of finding what is truly important to them in their lives. Most of these couples had left some form of highly lucrative but very stressful jobs in order to live free, and many of them have now found ways of making money online in some capacity.
Another great thing about this book in which I really enjoyed was Jen’s writing style. She isn’t verbose and looking to just fill in sentences, she had a lot that she wanted to tell you and managed to get it all in without droning on, she definitely hits her message home right from page 1. I also found the book to be fast-paced which was great for getting inspirational stories through to the reader (Life’s short, get to work)
My final thought is that, “Life Outside the Cubical,” was just a fun read in an ever increasingly depressing world. Sometime you just need to step back and find some good and listen to other people out there who may feel the same way you do about the important things in life. I highly recommend this book for anyone who just needs to hear something that is upbeat for a change, or for anyone who is serious about making life altering, meaningful, changes in their existence and happiness. A++ on this great little book of encouragement!!!
We did break free of that life, and did a 180 by moving to Costa Rica. But ! Old habits die hard, and it was tough to stay away from those computers. Both Jen and her husband Greg were great motivators. They walked their talk. Jen described their life in detail in her first book, "Costa Rica Chica," but she went more into depth in the Cubicle book, providing a much needed kick in the pants for us.
Jen and Greg continually meet the challenges of being ex pats (and there are many) with great attitudes, and a "can do" spirit. They truly embody the "Pura Vida" attitude as they encourage others to get OUT of that cubicle and experience life.
Jen's newest book is full of plain speaking good humor. The people she interviewed are the real deal. Jen asked them to explain the how and the why of their lifestyles. The "how" part intrigued me---how do you earn money to live??---and I was glad she addressed it.
Buy the book. As you read it, imagine yourself sitting on the patio with Jen and those she interviewed, sharing some wine and enjoying the spectacular Central Valley of Costa Rica. It's that good a read; like having a free flowing conversation which leaves you wanting to explore new possibilities.
