Father Nagle has written this book -- this "diary" -- in a very approachable style. That's great, because what he has to write about is, on every page, moving and inspiring. This is a book for everyone, since everyone either has or will experience the circumstances Father Nagle describes; and what everyone will find in this book will be a sure help, if taken to heart.

A strong criticism of the way CPE programs are run is that they focus on listening to the person being ministered to and reflecting back their emotions and feelings (which is not a bad thing and in many occasions all that can be done) but often they do not teach, encourage or challenge the minister to bring Christ to the patient in an effective manner. In this book Fr. Nagle shows you how to do so through the stories of situations and people he shares.

I lost my husband 2 years ago; the grief process has been extremely difficult. I needed to read something that explained suffering. Father Nagle's book was very helpful. I was looking for information and found a heart that understood and cared. Father's writing style is easy to follow even when he's talking about the great (and sometimes hard) mysteries of life. The fact that he deals with trauma and death on a regular basis lends credence to his writing. The comments about his personal struggles and his willingness to join in the struggles of others were uplifting and encouraging. I'm grateful for this book.

I read this book in italian, and I'm very happy to see it finally available in english. It really helped me learn to accompany the sick and dying with hope and with love. I highly recommend it.
