I have a 13 year old daughter, and even though A Life, Redefined is billed as young adult fiction, I would personally wait a few years before exposing my daughter. Among topics it covers: cutting, teen pregnancy, family physical abuse, major depression, and infanticide. All this can be some pretty heavy stuff for younger teens. This is not to say A Life is not very worthy read for when the time is right. To me this is one not to miss. I loved it and would add more stars if that were possible!
This is a difficult story to navigate emotionally, but only because of the tremendous heartache you feel for Rowan and the tragedies that have become her life. There are times that you want to tell her to get a grip, but you have to realize this is a 17 year old girl who surprisingly has strong character considering her circumstance...so yeah, she is allowed to have some immature moments. I am not sure I would have survived the environment she did and come out unscathed...not that I can say with absolute certainty that Rowan was able to as the story does not end with resolute closure, rather the light at the end of the tunnel, giving a glimpse of possibilities. Although it does have an epilogue, I was still a little disappointed that I did not get more of how Rowan's life becomes redefined...however, I discovered there is a book 2 so perhaps this explains why the story ends where it does. I will definitely be reading the second book.
