I'd been warned about the Life duet, but give me twisted books. Give me something different and something with some meat on the bones. Be warned that you may not like everything that happens, but Life isn't easy. At least book one will make you fall in love with some amazing characters before you are destroyed....With that said, don't stop on book 1. Actually, I don't think you can...so buckle up and enjoy the messed up ride....
The Life That Mattered started with a prologue that gets you. You don't really know what to make of it, but it's kind of confusing. But then JEA takes us back to the beginning of this story. Back to 3 friends, back to 2 couples, back to 1 life.
We start the story with 3 friends that have travelled together to Vancouver. Evelyn and Lila have been friends for years. They are more like sisters and they will always love each other as such. Then there is Graham. He got to be a part of their circle in college and then they become the 3. 3 best friends that would do anything for one another in their own ways. When Evelyn runs into Ronin at a little coffee shop, she is smitten. But this is just a one time thing, right? Luck would have it that the very next day, Ronin is leaving to his new job....in Aspen....where Evelyn lives! How perfect, right??
What starts out with a gut punch prologue, turns into a story of an instalust/instalove between Ronin and Evelyn, with a side of Lila and Graham's wedding preparations. But we also get to see how Graham views his friendships and how close Lila and Evelyn are. I LOVED the girls friendship and how they loved one another through everything. I loved the setting and how quickly Ronin fit into Evelyn's life. But I had this weird feeling about some things sitting there in the back of my mind. You know when you just feel something is off with one person, but aren't quite sure what it is, but it kind of feels icky? That's what I was getting as a little tickle back there.
BUT then there was Evelyn and Ronin and I just loved them. I loved how much Ronin loved Evie and I loved his beauty and strength (and maybe he's dirty mouth). He was just this side of perfect and made me fall in love with yet another JEA couple.
This is the book that feels like everything is fine and dandy and just full of love. Until it's not and then we are left on a cliffhanger. Good thing book 2 is out, because I'm ready to jump in.
For a beautiful, well-told character driven story, look no further. Jewel E Ann is amazing at crafting stories and characters that are unique, quirky and sexy all at once. They draw you in and make their journey relatable. But be warned of a twist that is knocking on the door and will throw you in book 2. For now, you are left with a cliffhanger......
"Life wasn't easy. It wasn't always beautiful. Some days it was flat-out cruel. But.....it undeniably worth it."
When we first meet Evelyn she’s on a trip with her best friends Lila and Graham. They are a huge part of her life. Lila whom she has known for most of her life and Graham who she briefly dated in college for like a second before realizing they are better at being best friends. There is such a strong bond and history with them intertwined over the years.
Ronin Alexander is this amazingly gorgeous, world traveling man, a super hero adventurer. A chance encounter over bubble tea and hot buns on his last day in Vancouver before leaving for a new job in Aspen, he meets the beautiful Evie -and later that night Lila and Graham. He knew from the first look across the table in the tea shop, this body soap making scientist would change his life forever. But Ronin was keeping secrets from Evie. From day one he’d been hiding behind secrets and lies to protect her. What happens when the secrets and lies start to pile up? When he has to look back on every decision he’s made would he change anything?
Evelyn’s character was phenomenal. She was so strong. She was in her mid thirties and had her crap together. She was successful and had a really cool business. She has her good friends, her parents. Then she meets this amazing man. Ronin was everything she was missing and didn’t even realize she was missing until she found him. GAH! They were nothing short of spectacular together. Every touch , every kiss, every moment they had was pure magic. I couldn’t have loved this couple more. They are perfect together. I loved their love. I love the way they view the word love. What it meant to them as a couple. You will know what I’m talking about when you read this.
When things began changing I really started to get terrified because I remembered back to the prologue and I’m not gonna lie I’m scared y’all! I have a feeling I’m in for the big D. Yup, DEVASTATION! I wanna beg, borrow and steal, do whatever I can to ensure everything is okay at the end of book two. Because right now I AM NOT OKAY!!
PSA- Check on your book buddies that just finished book one y’all, because we are not okay right now. 😭We need to form a circle of friends and hug it out, let the feelings flow my sisters. 😢😭😢😭
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐⭐⭐️- I’m officially in AWE!! Jewel Ann’s books always do this to me! I know going in I’m gonna get an emotional beat down! ( and she served it to us with a sweet little smile on her face) This was emotional, but it was funny and hot too. It was also so happy and swoony and frustrating. That Cliffy though! GAHHH!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥- Ronin was the most adorable gentleman and then Alpha AF in the sheets, or the shower or the floor. Holy Hot Dang!Talk about moanin for Ronin! Y’all it was the hottest thing ever! 🔥😍🔥
🌪Cliffhanger Warning- 🌪🌪🌪🌪🌪OMG!! I literally was bawling 😭 my eyes out at this cliffy. I need to know what happens like I need Air in my lungs.

Evelyn is on a vacation with her best friend Lila and Lila's boyfriend Graham. This is where she meets Ronin in a small cafe and they hit it off almost immediately. Ronin has just taken a job in Aspen which is where Evelyn lives and so their relationship develops into something so special they never want to be apart. Ronin is the sort of boyfriend we all wish we could have; he is loving and loyal, funny and sexy and smart with a dirty mouth and I adored him. Evelyn is a very special person too. This lady knows where she is going and is strong and loving with a stable loving family always in the background. This story is one of beauty and romance at it's best with lots of twists you don't see coming that throw a huge spanner in the works. Just when you think that you have this all sussed out, Jewel then completely flips your world around leaving you begging for more, especially after that ending/cliffhanger.
Secondary characters like Graham and Lila added immensely to the story which also had touches of humour thrown in which Jewel is well known for, but underneath all that is a serious intriguing subject which brings this story to life. I am gagging for the second book to find out how this story continues.
Absolute brilliance as usual from Jewel E Ann. Not to be missed !!!

On a trip to Vancouver with the happy couple, Evie decides to explore the area whilst they have some alone time, and meets a handsome stranger in a cafe.
As fate would have it, Ronin is just about to move to Aspen, where she lives.
Their relationship is a whirlwind of intense, raw, sexual chemistry, and so much love. And yet they keep secrets from each other.
I’m going to start with the bad here because the good far outweighs it.
The main thing for me was that I just don’t understand her friendships with Lila and Graham. Not so much with Lila but there were moments between them that I truly questioned things. But Graham? 99% of the time he came across as an arrogant, entitled jerk. Always lording things over everyone and just throwing money at any and every situation he could. What he did for her and her family - monetarily - was incredibly generous and lovely…but everything else was just…I dunno, I just don’t get it.
But her relationship with Ronin was so beautiful. They were so good for each other and loved each other’s families.
There’s a certain amount of tragedy in this book, and a paranormal undertone that makes for a bit of a psychological thriller element.
The prologue alludes to Ronin cheating on her, but that never comes to light in this book as it is a major cliffhanger ending! I’m truly hoping it was just worded in a way that the cheating was implied and not something that actually happened…but I’m not holding my breath.
But can I just say…THE MMC IS HALF MALAYSIAN AND I GOT SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS BECAUSE IT IS SO RARE TO COME ACROSS A MALAYSIAN IN A ROMANCE NOVEL IN MY EXPERIENCE! And as a mixed race, half Malaysian myself, it warmed my little heart to feel represented in some way.

A definite must read.🙂
