The book's advice seems valid for the most part. The book is put together so you can find your current toddler issue and jump to that section. This layout is helpful for busy parents pulling out their hair. The tips are genuine, and you can tell that the author and her sister have put some thought into how she raised her kids. It's nice validation for your parenting techniques. Nothing in here is groundbreaking, but it is reassuring.

Looking at the cover, one presumes this book was written by educated experts with maybe some research experience. The book reads as hastily typed by a busy parent. In fact, Michelle Smith states in the intro that experts can "bite" her and expect the book to be sloppy because she has no time to pee. I'm not looking to spend time reading something that someone hastily threw together. I have limited time as well! I appreciate experts and research. Even if your book is mostly about personal experience and stories, you can easily cite research that backs your stances.

The Ph. D. is actually the sister of the first author. It seems that the author threw this together and her sister browsed it and put her name in the title for marketing and validity. It worked on me, don't let it work on you.

As a father reading this book, I found the constant 'Girlfiend', 'oh lady','mommy',etc. infuriating and annoying. Her writing style takes away from the value of the content within her ideas and experiences. It was too much for me and my wife. We believe that this type of book reinforces the gender roles which cause many of the problems the authors are trying to fix.

The lack of any research backing and the terrible writing style really hurt this one. I cannot give any stars to sexist non-fiction. Don't buy it. There are plenty of other Toddler books out there.

I thought the content of the book was generally good though I wasn't crazy about the organization. It offers practical advice balanced with explanations and background on why toddlers do certain things or behave a certain way. I really liked the section on Power Phrases to use when you want to steer the child's behavior. I also enjoyed the plethora of real world examples sprinkled throughout the book.

What I didn't like was the author's tone. Like one of the other reviewers I found the book was written in a condescending and familiar manner which I did not enjoy. I understand that the author was trying to distinguish her book from other books on this topic which frequently tend to be dry and lack personality. But I think she overdid it. Could be a matter of personal preference though, and overall I still found the book valuable. One other thing, in the introductory chapter the author notes that for ease of use the book refers to "Mommies" as the audience but the book can be used by anyone that's taking care of toddlers. That's certainly true but it mostly reads as though it's targeted at stay at home moms (which I'm not) - just another nit I had regarding the overall feel of the book. Seemed like that sentence in the introduction was added as an afterthought to make the book more PC.

So many books for dealing with toddlers/the terrible twos (that typically start just before two and last well after three) are written from such a clinical perspective that they either bore you to death or you just can't relate. You can relate to this book because the author is a mom who has been through this experience with mulitple toddlers and wrote this book with the help of children's developemental psychologists and pediatricians. It really helped me understand how I could communicate with my toddler better and get MUCH better results and help my child develop into a more well rounded child. I strongly recommend this book for any new mom and/or dad - it will help prepare you for toddlerhood and make it much less stressfull for both you and your child.

Funny - Easy to read but packed with lots of good information. Especially Chapter 4: "Promoting Positive Behavior" and Chapter 8: "Taming Tigers". In Chapter 4, I liked the part of giving choices to your toddler instead of just issuing orders and frustrating them to anger and tears. In Chapter 8: "Taming Tigers" - "But I Waaannnttt It" (How many times have you heard this in Walmart??) - I think these words of wisdom should be posted in the store's lobby. - Loved this book!

The book is clear cut, easy to read and understand, with a lot of helpful examples. It really bothered me that they kept referring to the reader as "girlfriend" "lady" "Mama" etc., as if there is no possible a way a father could be reading a book on how to raise kids, so they lose some credibility for that. They know a lot about toddlers but apparently still think its 1950. Perhaps the next edition should include a chapter on how to avoid promoting gender stereotypes to your children.

I ordered 2 books and out of the 2, this is the easiest reading w/ realistic issues and helpful tips. Spoken like a true mother! With my 2 1/2 year old son, I don't get much time to read, but i'm hacking away at it, chapter by chapter and I find most things helpful.

We thought we were perfect parents until our third child came along and she showed us we had no idea what we were doing...lol found this book to be very insightful ...helped us take a step back from the chaos and see what was triggering her outburst and come up with simple strategies to manage them. Worth the money! I have loaned it to many friends and they all thanked me:)
