At least in my opinion, this book captures the spirit of Carmel ( what we have seen of it in our daughter's life) even better than the writings of St. Teresa herself or St. Therese, too, for that matter. Of course, they are both doctors of the Church for good reason, but for capturing the spirit of the order itself it would be hard to surpass The Life of Venerable Anne of Jesus. Like the order itself, the book is delightful.
My wife and I have been puzzling over how Anne of Jesus could possibly have avoided canonization given her life of well-attested heroic virtue, the many miracles following immediately on her death, and the strenuous efforts of both high churchmen and royalty to see her raised to the altars. Perhaps our Lord has been waiting to reveal her splendor in our time, for this book surely does that.
