I’ve made several recipes from this book, and they have all turned out well, but what brought me here to finally write a review is the carrot cake! I love when a recipe becomes my “new standard” and that’s how I feel about this cake - no need to look for another carrot cake recipe - the perfect one is right here! Beyond that, this is a beautifully photographed book with clear instructions and personal stories tied to the recipes. Glad I added it to my collection.

I have a million cookbooks but this one is very special. I usually don't care for the personal anecdotes with recipes but this cookbook reads so beautifully, and poetically reflects on baking/sharing food through major life events. While the stories are lovely, they don't bog down the recipes. I'm not a beginner and I still love the helpful baking tips given alongside the recipes. The recipes are clear (measurements given in volume and weight (cups/grams)), they don't usually require ingredients you don't have (although some specialty cookware is require for, say, madeleines), and some substitutions are offered (like, the option to use a store-bought pie crust. Not snooty!). There are french classics, southern classics, unique showstoppers, unfussy, everyday desserts, breads... I've made several breakfast items and cookies... going through a cookie phase I guess, and I plan to bake through the pies this holiday season. I have yet to try any of the donuts but I've seen lots of successful donut posts on the author's insta - foodieinnewyork. You can tell the author truly has heart and it comes through in the bakes. I bought this book for a young 15 year old girl for Christmas who said she liked to cook/bake. I never forgot Vallery from the The Great American Baking Show. I felt robbed not seeing her win, so I can’t imagine how she felt!! I’ve kept tabs on her over the years and when I looked Vallery up and found she had a new cookbook I immediately thought of this young girl and thought it would be a perfect gift for her. I looked through it and read her positive and inspirational story and many of the sweet anecdotes with some of her incredible looking recipes. I loved it so much I’m going to buy one for myself now even though I’m gluten intolerant lol. Thank you Vallery…I’m glad to see you doing well. You deserve all the success in the world. You are truly gifted in so many ways. Keep the cookbooks coming! You need your own cooking show!!
