There are a few large cities left that constitute what is left of the United States. Some small towns and villages survive independently or in loose association with each other. Some people live communally and continue to move toward complete self-sufficiency. Large nation states, huge multinational corporations, and highly interdependent systems have failed. .
This 500 page novel covers a week in the life of the main character, a man from New York City who discovers life outside the city, falls in love, and learns that he is more resilient than he thought even as he witnesses the remarkable resiliency that other humans have to both adapt to their world and to adapt their world to themselves. I particularly appreciated that the author's vision of such a future is both dire and optimistic. Best of all, there are no zombie apocalypses in this book!
