I am not accustomed to read religious books of a "feel-good" nature but this book caught my eye this evening while on one of my numerous Barnes & Noble book runs. It is an easy read, done in one sitting of several hours. Dallin Oaks shares experiences from his life that he has utilized to change his nature. Many of the stories come from his legal/academic training. One of the stories that I found particularly interesting was the one where he said that after the death of his first wife he gave all of the belongings of his wife to his children because he knew that if he remarried, the idea of the new wife inheriting his first wife's possessions could be harmful to his children. This book is a mere 159 pages and perhaps that is why I enjoyed it so much. Recommended.

This book is very interesting. Elder Oaks writes about very personal issues and some of the perplexities of life. He writes about the failed priesthood blessings given to his father by general authorities. He writes about dealing with the loss of his first wife to cancer. It is written in a humble, interesting, and insightful way. It is short enough to read in a couple of hours, but is worth re-reading several times. I highly recommend it.

i enjoyed the insights and the very personal sharing in Elder Oak's stories. Very Enjoyable to share his mortality, and 'humanness'!
A great man who is still learning and growing and overcoming himself and his weaknesses like the rest of us. He has given us 'permission' as it were to be imperfect and accept it as the way its supposed to be! Highly recommend this!

Dallin H. Oaks is a profound speaker. His distinctive voice stays with the listener and resonates within the soul. While reading this wonderfully insightful and helpful book, I could imagine his narration while reading. The counsel taught comes from personal experiences. Elder Oaks has overcome challenges through faith in Christ and ultimate devotion to the Almighty. His words have helped me to put my own challenges in perspective, and rely on those things that I know are true.

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of personal essays from Elder Oaks. I love the way he gives us a glimpse into some of the learning experiences of his own life, and then explains the lessons he has learned. His knowledge of gospel principles, along with the variety of challenges and unexpected events he has faced combine so well to give us greater insight into who he is as a person, and as a church leader. Even more though, they give us valuable insights that we can apply to the challenges and unexpected events of our own lives.

In Life Lessons learned Elder Oaks gives us a glimpse into a few of the experiences in his life that shaped him into the powerful leader he is today. From a very rocky beginning when he lost his father at a young age to his ultimate call to be an Apostle he shares nuggets of wisdom he learned along his journey in life.

The chapters in this book are quite short just 3 or 4 pages each. This made it a perfect book to read a chapter or two when I’ve had a few minutes or before falling asleep each night.

I used one of the chapters as a family home evening lesson for my kids earlier this week. Amazing that this great man whose career achievements including being a Utah Supreme Court judge and the President of BYU was once thought of himself as the dumbest boy in the classroom and had the lowest grades on his arithmetic papers. I was touched as he recounted the experience of losing his wife and his subsequent decision to remarry. His life story is truly inspiring.

I bought Elder Oaks' book for a specific reason. The book indeed fulfilled that reason. I then read more and enjoyed it greatly, reading about his life's experience in his cogent, well reasoned and honest style. I'm sure I'll read it again. I recommend it!

It's as if Dallin Oaks walked through life for 80 years gathering lesson treasures, and put them in a box and said "Here, these are some of the most important things I've learned, so you don't have to learn them for yourself. " You can't really place a value on that. Thank you Elder Oaks for being a righteous example and for sharing your insights.
