In her latest excellent mixed-media book, Life's Rich Tapestry (2019), Sally Cronin delivers a wide and varied collection of writing styles and themes, all with the goal of enriching the tapestry of the reader's life. She covers nature, humanity, faeries, remembering, pets, and more in varied writing styles including Haiku, Tanka, Etheree, Cinquain, 99 word fiction, short stories, speculative fiction, and others.
Each style comes with its own challenges--as those who write in them know--but Cronin moves through them with equal ease and mastery. The challenges of writing micro fiction (like Haikus and 99 word fiction) require a story--be it fact or fiction--told quickly in bitesize chunks that no one can skip over or get bored with. Here are a few examples:
Stop and smell the roses
As recommended I stopped to smell the roses
precious time well spent.
Waiting for Spring
Waiting for magical buds to appear
when the tempest has passed and sun returns to warm.
Old Soldiers
And, although khaki and merits
are returned to their boxes,
the memories remain
etched upon their hearts
their minds and dreams,
where comrades
haunt them
still.
A Dog's Life
They take no heed of the passing of time,
nor do they see into the future.
There are crucial priorities
that have to be considered.
Walks, sleep, play and their food.
But, above all else
they worship you,
as leader
of their
pack.
Sally's longer fiction shows the artistry she can unveil when she digs deeper into topics and themes. More than a twitter novel, different than a poem, Cronin took this challenge and delivered admirably. Here’s one of my favorites.
The Junkyard Dog
Charlie was a junkyard dog and had the scars to prove it. He was head of security of this fenced off mass of scrap metal, dotted with mounds of old tyres he called home, and he took his job very seriously.
What a beautiful experience it was reading this book.

Life’s Rich Tapestry: Woven in Words is a beautiful collection of various types of poetry, 99-word flash fiction, and short stories that the author has written in response to various blog challenges within her circle of blogging friends. These are thoughtfully penned poems and stories that reflect upon life experiences and imaginings. That Sally Cronin is a master storyteller is evidenced in this heartwarming collection.
The book is divided into categories with something for every reader. If you like fairies, there is a section of poetry for you. The section All Things Human addresses aging and youth, beauty, greed, romance and much more. Do you like nature? The Natural World has poems to keep you reading. There are quite a few more categories of life experiences and other topics to pique your curiosity.
Flash fiction always fascinates me. So much can be said in very few words, and Sally Cronin is an expert at answering the prompt. Life’s Greatest Gift is one of these prompts. It is skillfully written with great tenderness. My Mouse is a flash with a hilarious twist at the end. I’m still chuckling over that one. Reunion is a touching response to the prompt. I couldn’t begin to tell you which of the flash fiction is my favorite.
My favorite short story was Great Aunt Georgina. It was heartwarming and heart wrenching at the same time. Of course, I don’t want to tell you what the storyline is, you’ll just have to read it yourself along with the rest of the varied short stories.

There is a lot to love in Sally Cronin’s collection of verse, micro fiction and short story, a literary treasury entitled Life’s Rich Tapestry Woven in Words. With numerous works of non-fiction to her credit, early on Sally flexes her poetic muscles through the discipline of forms like Haiku, Tanka, Etheree or Cinquain. One line I liked especially in this section was this: “Rust and gold are the crowns of November.”
A section on fairy tales will enchant lovers of fantasy as will the unit on canines and felines, obviously for pet lovers. I smiled as I read her ode to a digital mouse: “My Mouse I am extremely attached to my mouse, small and demanding at times, but I need a muse that is easy to maintain, and doesn’t demand three walks a day and half my dinner.”
The book, organized in twelve units, including imaginative 99-word fiction, reflects rich friendships with other writers and honors members of her family in the acknowledgements and in a concluding tribute.
In brief, Ms. Cronin’s collection showcases her literary gifts as well as the power of collaboration to create and inspire. I can definitely award her latest effort five stars for creativity and variety (2019).

Sally Cronin is a natural storyteller and this book is a wonderful collection of verse, micro fiction and short stories. Her breadth of life experience and wisdom show in her words and the writing style draws the reader in.
Sally’s verses cover everything from life, past times, emotions, our furry companions and nature. ‘Romance’ had me scrolling back to re-read her words and ‘Rejection’ & ‘Betrayal’ struck heart chords long buried. I found enchantment and magic in her fairy verse and in the shapes of the words and poems on the page.
Her micro fiction ‘Broken’ raised a smile and ‘Musical Interlude’ moved me to tears. A potion from The Witch’s Handbook will have you laughing and many of us will find ourselves in that one!
None who read this book will forget Jimmy or the Elephants, yet my favourite story is ‘Great Aunt Georgina’. There is so much packed into this short story and it is one that will stay with you.
In reading this collection, I feel you will want to meet Sally and sit at her kitchen table, hearing her stories and feeling her warm wisdom. I hold hope that she will share with us again in this way, as it is a loving showcase for her gifts.

There is such wonderful variety in Life’s Rich Tapestry by Sally Cronin.
A really lovely collection of poems and short stories, all delightfully illustrated.
Always a fan of Sally’s storytelling, I really enjoyed reading this book.
Originally bought as an eBook, I will be purchasing a paperback copy for my bookshelf, so it will always be there to read again (and again!)

Her book is divided into sections: The Seasons of the Year, All Things human, Fairies and other Folk, The Natural World, Remembrance, Celebrating Pets, Random Thoughts, 99 Words in a Flash, Short Stories, The Superiority of Cats, Speculative Fiction, And Last but
I downloaded the book both on my Kindle and on my iPad. I found the iPad experience much more pleasant because the beautiful illustrations were in color, bringing out the richness of the text. One such striking illustration, by Sally, is of a peacock in its glorious and proud colors. Also, because the screen is larger, I appreciated much more the visual shapes of her poetry.
These are magical, enchanting and touching stories where the good always win. They are uplifting stories though nonetheless profound and always about love in its many forms.
And I mustn't forget that there are stories about dogs. A mutt protecting his master from thugs; an old dog in a residence for the elderly showing how love can make one feel young again and a mistreated dog finds kindness in a half-starved young man.
There's so much in this book that it is impossible to do it justice in a single review. You have to read it and re-read. Its title suits it perfectly: Life's Rich Tapestry.
