"After reading this book, you'll crave holiness in a whole new way and find yourself equipped with time-tested tools for renewing your relationship with God and living a daily life of communion with him." --Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York
"Reading this book is a true retreat--it quickly drew my prayer life to new depths. Fr. John takes us through the timeless wisdom of St. Francis de Sales in a way that is accessible and applicable for anyone at any age. A must-read and a real gift!" --Sarah Swafford, Author of Emotional Virtue
"This is an altogether beautiful book filled with wholesome and attractive spiritual wisdom. It presents the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales in a lively, accessible style that is utterly sincere. It should gain the widest possible readership, and may very well endure as a small, portable classic in its own right. Highly recommended." --John C. Cavadini, Professor of theology and director of the Institute for Church Life, University of Notre Dame
"In this book, Fr. John Burns helps us access the famous meditations of St. Francis de Sales in order to put ourselves in the presence of God. This is a gift that ultimately speaks to our salvation and cultivates the daily decisions that help us choose God now and in everything we do. This book is for all who take their faith seriously but somewhere along the way dismissed the notions of heaven and hell. Through his commentary on St. Francis deSales's themes of judgment and death, heaven and hell, Fr. John Burns reminds us of their centrality to our eternal life and implications for our time here on earth." --Carolyn Woo, President and CEO of Catholic Relief Services

My first copy, given by Ave Maria Press for a fair and honest review - I LOST. However, only 1/2 way through the book and absolutely loving it - I went and BOUGHT my another copy for myself! Learning the proceeds help support seminarians was also a good reason to spend the money for another copy! I had to finish! And I KNOW it is one I will pick up every year and RE-READ!!
No matter how busy of life you may lead, there is always time for Jesus....and there is time for this book. Take a chance and lift up your heart!
According to Doctor of the Church de Sales, devotion “is simply true love of God.” But that love does not always come easy. For most of us, it requires “a radical reordering of priorities and relationships.” These ten meditations “represent, in their totality, a journey of the soul with the highest of hoped-for outcomes: right relationship with God and right understanding of one’s purpose.”
The ten meditations are: On our Creation, On the End for Which We Were Created, On God’s Benefactions, On Sin, On Death, On Judgment, On Hell, On Paradise, The Election and Choice of Heaven, and The Election and Choice the Soul Makes of a Devout Life.
As the list reveals, there are some weighty topic included in these meditations. People today don’t tend to spend much time contemplating the evil of sin or the pains of hell. But the meditations speak to questions that every individual wrestles with in life. Who am I? Why am I here? What is the purpose of life? What happens to me after I die?
For those who would like to read the original meditations, they are included in an appendix, however Fr. Burns has achieved his goal of updating St. Francis de Sales’ meditations for today. He writes in an accessible style appropriate for teens and adults. Reading about and meditating on the subjects of Lift up Your Heart has the power to transform your life if you are willing to make the choice to live for God.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Fr. John has a tremendous gift and if you take the journey with him through this book, I urge to allow your heart to soak in the meditations - this will surely bring to light sins that have been hidden.
This book has taken me to high peeks - having an awesome perspective of the goodness of God, rejoicing in His generosity and patience but just as quickly it's taken me down to valleys below; alarming me to the reality of my sins, and my choosing to remain in them. These guided reflections have pried open an awareness of the real me - painfully at times- exposing my weaknesses.
I thank Fr. John for this book and his gift to go directly to the heart. His words are full of compassion and understanding for our broken nature but with greater love and faith he urges us to reconcile and act, today! Do not be surprised to find yourself on your knees, with your heart open, craving God's intervention and inspiration!
