"After reading this book, you'll crave holiness in a whole new way and find yourself equipped with time-tested tools for renewing your relationship with God and living a daily life of communion with him." --Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York
"Reading this book is a true retreat--it quickly drew my prayer life to new depths. Fr. John takes us through the timeless wisdom of St. Francis de Sales in a way that is accessible and applicable for anyone at any age. A must-read and a real gift!" --Sarah Swafford, Author of Emotional Virtue
"This is an altogether beautiful book filled with wholesome and attractive spiritual wisdom. It presents the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales in a lively, accessible style that is utterly sincere. It should gain the widest possible readership, and may very well endure as a small, portable classic in its own right. Highly recommended." --John C. Cavadini, Professor of theology and director of the Institute for Church Life, University of Notre Dame
"In this book, Fr. John Burns helps us access the famous meditations of St. Francis de Sales in order to put ourselves in the presence of God. This is a gift that ultimately speaks to our salvation and cultivates the daily decisions that help us choose God now and in everything we do. This book is for all who take their faith seriously but somewhere along the way dismissed the notions of heaven and hell. Through his commentary on St. Francis deSales's themes of judgment and death, heaven and hell, Fr. John Burns reminds us of their centrality to our eternal life and implications for our time here on earth." --Carolyn Woo, President and CEO of Catholic Relief Services

My first copy, given by Ave Maria Press for a fair and honest review - I LOST. However, only 1/2 way through the book and absolutely loving it - I went and BOUGHT my another copy for myself! Learning the proceeds help support seminarians was also a good reason to spend the money for another copy! I had to finish! And I KNOW it is one I will pick up every year and RE-READ!!
"As we look on, Christ moves his right hand in beckoning and, resplendent in all the glory of heaven, the Blessed Virgin Mary comes forth. She looks at you, in tender and powerful motherhood, and smiles. Then, with all love of a perfect mother, she takes your face in her hands and implores you: 'Do not spurn the goodwill of God Almighty nothing will ever cause you such sadness and despair! I your heavenly Mother have been and always will be constantly at work imploring God the Father on your behalf. I beg him perpetually to grant you every good gift from on high to strengthen you against all attack and all despair. Look to my Son, and say with me 'Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum - May it be done to me according to your word'" (see Lk 1:38)
I could list many inspirational quotes from this book that lift up my heart. The wisdom of Francis de Sales is neatly ordered by John Burns into a daily retreat that day by day draws the heart closer to the heart of God! As contemplated by these two saints, we come to know God's love is truly overwhelming:
"It pierces your soul now with fresh insight. He does not need you - rather than need you, God longs for you."
And the home he has prepared?
"As you see that glorious place before your own eyes, your soul stirs for its homeland. You discover the whole heavenly host and the blessed long to have you in their company. You are not lost in a sea of millions; you are a singularly precious jewel of God's creation, a jewel made to shine uniquely with the glory of God."
Finally they bring it home to your every day:
"You realize your perception of reality has been altered forever. Having seen what you have seen, you now understand that these eternal realities lie just beneath the surface of the visible world, just beneath the surface of every choice and every decision."
I could go on quoting because book is full the wisdom of the Holy Spirit as our dear Mother intercedes, just as she did for the Apostles in the upper room 2000 years ago. Thank you Fr John Burns for your listening attentively to that Spirit and your keen insight into the needs of your flock!

I read this book last year. I needed to contemplate each chapter for days and really reflect on it, so a 10 day retreat turned into a 30 day retreat.Read more
