Light After Dark starts out a few days before Christmas as The Base prepares for the upcoming holiday festivities. There’s nostalgia in using a discarded building on base where it all began, which quickly takes us back in time to how it all started. The vision was an altruistic desire to save heinously abused and tortured young souls from the depraved desires and acts of debauched adults. The story reveals how Ardan and Alasdair met and fell in love, and how The Base became the safe haven it is today. Hopefully you can tell that The Base series is best read in order.
Light After Dark is not all sparking romance, as we often see with holiday stories. Here we learn the brutalities Ardan and the others endured. The development of Ardan’s true character, one we have come to know and love, is unveiled along with the role Alasdair (Spitfire) played, with his fiery temper and endless compassion, in healing Ardan and allowing him to solidify his vision for The Base.
Light After Dark is a poignant depiction of how the inhabitants of The Base come to be, how each and every one of them finds a soulmate and overcomes the atrocities of the past. I found it very enlightening to discover the history surrounding this endeavor. The reunions, deceptions and evil masterminds, along with all the heartbreak and happiness, keep you engaged to the very end.
Approximately ninety percent of the story is set in the past, working towards the present day, with only a brief mention of the holidays. However, when we return to the present, the holiday celebrations are in full swing. They are filled with excitement, happiness and heartfelt moments of love and commitment due, in part, to the magic of the holiday season.
In Light After Dark it is apparent The Base will continue to thrive under the tutelage of Ardan and Alasdair. There is an abundance of children to save and no rest for this family of special and kind rebels who conquer adversity one step at a time. The Base exists to provide love, loyalty and a protection uniquely its own.
This book gives insight to the beginning of The Base, a glimpse of Ardan and Alasdair's beginning. We got to met a few of the people who helped in building a place for the battered, bruised and kidnapped youngsters, a Haven of sorts.
We were also introduced to Alasdair relatives, the ones behind The Dragon House and what an interesting lot.
Secrets and more secrets, all that needs to be revealed.
This book is invigorating, thrilling, heartfelt warmth and joy. It's a great Holiday read.
I recommend reading this book.
H.M. Wolfe and Evera Ellis, thank you again for another great read.
