The Scout model is very useful for emergency kits or EDC (every day carry). The larger Army model is better for regular use in camping and hiking.
The only downside is that since this is a mini, it doesn't throw out as big a spark as the full size firesteel. If you could find yourself in a serious survival scenario, buy the full size firesteel.
If this is your primary way to light a fire, get the larger one - it should have a stronger spark which makes it easier to ignite not-so-great tinder.
The small size is perfect for me because I only use it as a backup for a lighter.
Light my fire also has a Spork they make whick I keep in my backpack at all times, this thing scoops a lot of food and is easy to clean and packs very light. It's really nice to have your own camp spoon/fork. Also, no searching for plastic ware for your cup o noodles at work! Very flat so doesn't take up much room. Great products, I recommend these both.
25Feb2013 update: Amazon rocks. Received replacement steel in very timely manner. Have been extra careful with this one (i.e. supporting back of the steel in addition to the handle) and so far has been working well.
