The only one who can save Sera now is the one she spent her life planning to kill.
The truth about Sera’s plan is out, shattering the fragile trust forged between her and Nyktos. Surrounded by those distrustful of her, all Sera has is her duty. She will do anything to end Kolis, the false King of Gods, and his tyrannical rule of Iliseeum, thus stopping the threat he poses to the mortal realm.
Nyktos has a plan, though, and as they work together, the last thing they need is the undeniable, scorching passion that continues to ignite between them. Sera cannot afford to fall for the tortured Primal, not when a life no longer bound to a destiny she never wanted is more attainable than ever. But memories of their shared pleasure and unrivaled desire are a siren’s call impossible to resist.
And as Sera begins to realize that she wants to be more than a Consort in name only, the danger surrounding them intensifies. The attacks on the Shadowlands are increasing, and when Kolis summons them to Court, a whole new risk becomes apparent. The Primal power of Life is growing inside her, pushing her closer to the end of her Culling. And without Nyktos’s love—an emotion he’s incapable of feeling—she won’t survive her Ascension. That is if she even makes it to her Ascension and Kolis doesn’t get to her first. Because time is running out. For both her and the realms.

Wow.
Folks, straight up no words came to my mind beyond WOW and MASTERPIECE as I finished ALITF at 2:36 am. My mind was blown, and I was in awe of what I just read. Immediately time sped up, and my mind started buzzing with a hundred revelations, and endless ideas. I started frantically writing notes and questions. The fun didn’t end when the book did, it just kept on going in my mind! This was such a fantastic moment because I absolutely love when a book is closed, and then the theories and OMG moments take center stage in your brain. I still feel that joyful continuation of all the excitement, and hype leading up to it, and I’ll be pestering everyone I know to tell me when they finish because I MUST DISCUSS!!
So, why was the hype worth it? Why all the joy? First and foremost it’s no exaggeration when I say I absolutely could not put it down. I listened to the audiobook non stop for 16 hours at one point! That is because in every single moment, I found myself wishing I could listen faster than humanly possible to know what happens next. There were no lulls, no “filler” chapters I had to slug through. It gripped me and still hasn’t let go! Masterfully paced with so much delicious anticipation, I loved the wild ride of emotions! My mind continuously spiraled into a thousand theories, and potential reveals but as always Jen always surprises me! I live for the GASP I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING moments and Jen came to serve it all!! As I also always say I’m a sucker for books that make me laugh, cry AND scream and Jen gave it all, while having me begging PLEASE JUST ONE MORE PAGE! (I’m still begging!!)
I loved seeing the characters growth both individually, as units and as found families. We got so much more depth to each, with reveals, and answers we have all been DYING for! We also got plenty of new WHAT DOES THIS MEAN moments to keep our brains searching, and inevitably reaching for rereads to look for more clues. I feel like the characters and places they inhabit really developed so much more fully in my mind. Everything gained a new layer of depth, and that’s thanks to Jen’s beautiful descriptions, and the deeply thoughtful humanizing of characters. I found so many moments where I felt deeply moved to tears or chills. Moments where I found quotes I HAD to write down to hold onto forever, because they felt like they were always somehow waiting for me. There to say hey, you’re not alone, it’s okay to not be okay. I found myself feeling like my own heart was there beating in Sera’s chest, and it was impactful beyond words. This book was so much more than just a good story, it was that moment of feeling seen and the knowing that you are not alone that so many of us search for. Thank you Jen for how much you clearly poured your heart into this, countless readers will be forever changed by your words.
I also have to give credit to narrator Stina Nielsen’s amazing ability to bring so much emotion through without it feeling forced. I felt lost in the story, and completely immersed in the audio. Stina creates voices that are completely unique to every single character that speaks. You read that right, every single speaking character has a unique voice. How she manages to have such a range that is so well honed is incredible. It’s the reason why I always recommend the audiobooks for both From Blood & Ash series and this one as well because Stina truly brings them alive. Each characters voice is entirely unique, and recognizable without being told who is speaking. They feel real, tangible, and it’s clear she cares about the character as a whole, including their experiences that might influence the tone, and manner in which they speak. Her voice stays put in my mind whenever I see fan art, or read from the book without narration. Her range of male voices is particularly impressive, nothing sounds forced at all. She has a wide range of accents, and varied inflections that also play into the age of characters flawlessly. I especially love her voices for the young Draken Reaver Butt, because in my opinion that’s him in a nutshell. How she can go from a child’s voice to Sera talking without an ounce of trouble is flawless, she’s like a whole cast in one voice actor! Nothing feels forced or over engineered, they all feel realistic, true to the characters, as do the subtle differences in her tones and accents. Fun fact: Hands down her Casteel Da’Neer voice from FBAA is 100% my Cas now and always (which is saying something because he is my number one book boyfriend of all time!) and reading the book without her voice as Cas feels like I’m missing him! Stina will keep me coming back time, and time again to both series audiobooks (and anything else she narrates honestly) for all she brings to these worlds!
So, to wrap up, and keeping it spoiler free, I’ll just say that I had so much hype going into ALITF. Especially since I am a member of JLA’s book club in which we reread all the books in both Blood and Ash and Flesh and Fire leading up to release day. We all met via zoom every two weeks to talk theories, and incredibly pick Jen’s brain. So my excitement and my expectations as a massive fan of hers were huge. I’ve spent months in daily group chats theorizing and day dreaming of what this book might hold. As usual, she did not disappoint, she somehow exceeded my expectations, as did Stina Neilson. This is hands down one of the best books Jen has ever written, and imo the best narration by Stina to date. Run don’t walk to read this book, because you might just find you needed it more than you could have ever imagined ❤️

Armentrout has once again created a masterpiece.
A devastatingly beautiful story, that will have you wanting to strangle some characters a few times, and an ending that will probably have you gasping and wanting to physically harm a specific character in a way you never thought before!
A Light in the Flame picks up right where A Shadow in the Ember left off, like right after that bombshell revelation about who Sera actually is and sadly how close her end might be.
Before we go any further, a reminder once again, this review will contain major spoilers from book one, so please don't read past this point!!
So Sera is very set on her ways to complete her duty.
I completely understand that Sera was insistent on going to Kolis and continue with the initial plan that was set for Nyktos, but her instance also came about because she found herself being cared for. For the first time in her life someone actually cared about her wellbeing, someone is there for her if she wants to talk, simply put, someone is there for her.
And she has no idea what to do with it.
As we learned in book one, Sera carries the Embers of Life. The reason why Daddy Nyktos' daddy (get it, daddy? because Ash is daddy Nyktos and I'm talking about his actual dad? No? Okay, I'm cool I promise!) made the deal with her family and the reason why she is meant to be his consort, his Liessa, his queen.
Because she carries the Embers in her, Nyktos is trying his hardest to keep her safe (also, because he really likes her and he likes her sexy body), keep her alive until he can figure out a way to remove the Embers without harming her and without her loosing her life if she Ascends.
The problem with Nyktos' plan is that he expects Sera to value her life more than she actually does, for her to stay still and to not run into battle any chance she gets and to not be willing to still fulfill her duty, "make him fall in love with her and then kill him." But "him" it's not Nyktos, it has never been. It's Kolis. The fake Primal of Life.
Sera finds herself without purpose and a realm of possibilities she never expected to have.
She is sort of spiraling and the only ways she can cope with the knowledge that Nyktos was the wrong primal, she is the reincarnation of Kolis' human obsession, she might perish before she turns 21 (which is coming up in just a few months) and that Nyktos can never actually fall in love with her, is by being a bit... destructive.
Sera is willing to risk her life to make sure no one dies protecting her and do whatever is in her power to restore balance with the Primals, even if it kills her.
Nyktos is also... stubborn. Some of the decisions he made had me wondering what in the hell he was actually thinking when he decided that was the best course of action.
Some of the issues they dealt with could have been prevented if they just were honest and talked things through, but I think because both Sera and Nyktos are trying to understand whatever it is they are feeling toward each other and not having to communicate is their usual MO things didn't always work in their favor.
Of course A Light in the Flame is not all problems, battles and sadness. There are so very spicy, sexy times that had me sweating and wishing I could find my own Ash.
Sera and Ash have much to figure out, but their character development through the 652 pages of this beautiful book takes us through their highs and lows in the most amazing ways that you will not be able to stop reading.
As I said earlier in this post, A Light in the Flame is a devastatingly beautiful and heartbreaking book, with moments that made me laugh in ways I didn't' expect, exasperation levels I didn't think I could reach and some of the most swoon worthy moments I have read in quit some time.
Armentrout created a beautiful masterpiece and you will not want to miss a single word of it.

Also I had bought the paperback instead of the hardback so it would match with the previous in the series since the hardbacks weren’t available in the U.K. before but the paperback is a very different size to the predecessors so it doesn’t match anyway.

I loved ASITE, so I was eagerly counting down the days till ALITF released, and boy was it worth the wait! I was hooked from the beginning all the way to the very end, soaking up all the revelations, twists, betrayals, monstrous creatures, drakens and the progressive romance between Sera and Nyktos.
Sera and Nyktos came very close to stealing the Crown from Poppy and Cas as favourite couple. The angst, the tension, the steam, was just chefs kiss. I can’t wait to see how their relationship develops in the next one!
We were introduced to more gods/goddesses in this book and I loved them all, some more than others. They were all incredibly written and I loved how each and every one served a purpose in the story. Nektas, the baby draken, and Nyktos’s crew have a special place in my heart.
It was cruel of JLA to end the book the way she did, but I guess I should be used to it at this point. So, so, so stoked for the next one! I’m also hoping that we get some news about the next book in the FBAA series because I need me some more Poppy and Cas.
If you’re a huge fantasy lover as I am, then I recommend for you to start this series. It will not disappoint!

Nyktos and Sera are very similar as characters, personalities and in some ways their lives since they both have lived mostly alone. Nyktos in his attempt to protect people from Uncle Kolis whilst it was chosen for Sera. They're two lonely souls who want to find that one person, protect the ones they care about and want to help and save people, every decision they make is ruled by this which leads to many intense conversations between them.
Lots of inner monologue from Sera to begin with, definitely more of a slower burn and pace but we are getting her point of view and how she feels about things and who she is but it was so deeply emotional and just had you wanting to right all the wrongs she's been forced to face. But most importantly, she is being seen, heard, cared for more than she has ever been in her entire life by the Primal she was raised to kill and it changes her. Sera is the vessel, she has the embers of life inside her and they must come out but can they do so in time?
Lots of character growth and development from both Nyktos and Sera. Sera finds it hard to be the person she once was and I really enjoyed how even though she has betrayed him, Nyktos understands and cares for her. He is just such a pure soul inside and he deserves to be the true Primal of Life.
I enjoyed meeting more of the Primals and Gods, more of the characters who live in the Shadowlands, cameos from the FBAA series and of course the evil overlord himself, Kolis. We got more interactions with Nektas and these scenes were definitely one of the highlights.
JLA still left us with a cliffhanger of epic proportions that has me wishing the for the year to pass by fast so I can read the next book.

Although this book still felt a little like FBAA fanfiction, it didn't annoy me anywhere near as much as ASITE. The plot was way less predictable and I could never figure out where it was going to go next. It was interesting to see the links between main and prequel series; how this leads to future events and with my added knowledge the main characters here don't yet know. ALITF has amazing mental health rep as Nyktos supports Sera through her anxiety. It was also great to see both their undeniable chemistry, and some of their more serious interactions surrounding issues like consent. Nyktos is a sweetheart and doesn't deserve any of what he's suffered

One of my favourite scenes was Sera goading Nyktos into fight and then besting him. That ending though 😱 I'm absolutely fuming with Kolis, and I feel so betrayed by Attes. I'm not sure I'm ready for the chaos that's coming next, although there is a little relief knowing Sera can't die yet. Also, have I said I hate Veses?
Theory: Nyktos has his kardia back and can safely ascend Sera
