About the Author
Moira Katson writes Fantasy and Science Fiction novels. Born and raised in the farmland of the eastern United States, she is now a transplant living in the oft-frigid wastes of the midwest, where she is learning to love hot dish, fried food on a stick, ice fishing, and the hilarious faces her friends make when she tells them about winter temperatures. Despite the fact that she had been writing since childhood, Moira majored in nice, sensible subjects in college and went on to have a nice, sensible job, all the while continuing to write about dragons, courts, and spaceships. She has since bowed to the inevitable and begun releasing her work into the world! Her first novel, Mahalia, was released in 2012, and her latest series, the Light & Shadow Trilogy, was published in April 2013. In the first book, Catwin, an orphan girl raised by a town healer gets swept away by court intrigue when she is chosen to be a shadow - assassin if you will. She gets trained as a shadow to Miriel DeVere. You can say they both hate each other at first. And apparently, it is Catwin's destiny to be betrayed by someone. The person who betrayed her, and you don't see this until the third book, shocked me and normally, I can pinpoint exactly what happens in novels.
This is a fresh new breath in the fantasy pool and there isn't even a hint of magic and sorcery in it. It's so realistic I felt drawn to the characters and empathized with Catwin and Miriel. Even the supporting characters felt real. I would recommend this trilogy to go on any reader's shelf. I'd love to see more books from Moira Katson in the near future.
again, anyone browsing reviews, "The Shadow & Light" books awesome & a "must read "! I promise you won't be disappointed. :)
I have not read a plot of this nature in the genre before, Not that I can remember. I found the story line flowed well.
There were some cold blooded deaths which put it into the dark side. No more than a good murder mystery though. I am still not sure if this was supposed to be a Sci-Fi fantasy or not. Might have been political in nature or social commentary as well. It is really hard to explain without some spoilers.
The ending is surprising.
The Light and Shadow series avoids the standard trappings female based books. The story is not romance driven but it finds its way into love that can never be. It is intriguing and heartbreaking and worth every second spent reading.
The plot is familiar enough to not need an over abundance of explanation - court intrigue, war, love, power. But it's unique enough to hold your attention, to demand to be read.
The characters grew and learned throughout the books. They were complex and interesting and not at all perfect.
I spent the last four chapters or so crying. And there is no higher praise than that. To come to love a world and characters enough that their heartache, chaos, grief becomes my own.
