I enjoyed the book "The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians)" very much. Even though I saw the movie first, I can agree that the book was more intriguing. The movie made up a lot of the events and left out many of the characters. Though the movie was still good, I preferred the book for the following reasons:
1. There were more characteristics of the characters. This, I liked because, it allows more feelings and helps you to visualize them.
2. The events were clearer. Though there were many unexpected events, they were all necessary. One thing led to the next, and it all flows easily.
3. The characters were thought out better. Take Annabeth for example. In the movie, Annabeth was (in the beginning) a tough, hard to get, warrior. Then, after she got beat by Percy, she started softening saying "she had feelings for him". According to what I read, Annabeth had liked Luke, and she was rough to Percy even if he was injured, hurt, sad, etc. The book had followed what her original personally was. The movie was less focused on that development of character.
4. The ending was more mysterious. In the book, you kind of expected Percy to stay at Camp Half-Blood, but in the last page, he decided to leave and go to him mom. Again, in the movie, most as made up. It ended with him and Annabeth sword fighting (and again, Annabeth was easy with him) at Camp Half-Blood. The book was more mysterious because you didn't know what might happen to him next.

There are many smaller, more specific reasons for liking the book better. These are just bigger examples that spread throughout the book. I think that the book was well-though out and over all, spontaneous.

every one kept telling me to read the series. I am so glad I did! I have always loved myths on the Greek Gods and Goddess! the only thing I feel they did wrong with Medusa's tale. I know in some story's she's the sea god's girlfriend.. but in MOST tales she was rapped by him in Athena's temple. but I can see how little kids shouldn't get that side of the tale. still it'd be nice if they kept it a true tale. but besides that it was awesome! I was totally lost in the world of Percy, and I can't wait to collect all of the books!

The first book in an engaging series for young people, young Percy Jackson is a troubled pre-teen who discovers that he's the demigod son of a well-known Greek god. While at a camp for half-bloods, he discovers his true heritage and goes on a quest to save the world. While some young people will be drawn in by the similarity to the Harry Potter series, others will connect with the Greek mythology theme. Rick Riordan's experience as an middle school teacher is clearly reflected in this wonderful novel that would easily fit into the middle school curriculum. From his understanding of the fears and ambitions of pre-teens to his knowledge of Greek mythology and the middle school curriculum, Riordan's series would make a great literature connection between language arts, history, along with music, art and science.

If you're looking for a super technology connection, get young people involved with building a Greek mythology wiki such as http://mra-ancient-greece.wikispaces.com/ or http://meyerisland.wikispaces.com/The+Lightning+Thief

I purchased this book in Kindle format because it was on sale, and I do not regret it in the least. A friend of mine recommended the series to me a long time ago. I enjoyed reading a new take on the classic themes and characters found in mythology. The sort of experiences that young Percy has resonate because they're the same experiences and emotions that real people can have (at least in general) no matter what genre the story might be, and that's why the narrative is interesting: there's something real in it even though it's so heavily in the realm of the fantastic, and some of his experiences and struggles hit really close to home for me and I'm sure for other people. Even though this is a young adult novel, it still has appeal for a grown-up audience, and that's why I don't doubt I'll reread it later.

One of the best books ever. I've read it like five times. The author tells the story great. He makes you feel like you are right beside Percy💧, Annabeth 📖and Grover 🌲the entire way through their quest. Lots of people say it reminds them of Harry Potter, and in a way, it does. But I first head this story 5 years ago when one of the kids in my third grade class told my teacher it would be a great read out loud book. She read it and as soon as she was done, I instantly picked up the next one. Then the next one, then the next one, all the way until this year when the last book of the Hero's of Olympus series came out. By far one of the best books I have ever read. Well...... I hope you found this helpful. 💜

This book was suggested to me before watching the movie, I'm glad I haven't seen the movie yet. This was no mystical (confusing) Harry Potter type of book, it had great character development with a solid storyline.

You'll be happy you read the book, if you haven't seen the movie yet. I'm confident there are lots of gaps that the book fills in where the movie does not.

Enjoy the read

Percy Jackson thought he was a normal boy...ok, maybe not exactly normal, considering his ADHD, dyslexia and his annoying ability to get kicked out of any school at the drop of a hat. This year, Percy is attending Yancy Academy, his sixth school in 6 years and he is already on his last chance. Determined to be on his best behaviour on his class trip to the museum, he ignores the school bully's attempts to tick him off, despite the spitwads. But the last thing he expected was to have his maths teacher turn into a monster who tried to kill him! Luckily for him, his pen turns into a magical, glowing bronze sword that slices and dices monsters with disturbing ease.

After dispatching the teacher from hell, he discovers that no-one else from his class trip even remembers the now dusted teacher. Is he going crazy? However after accidently overhearing a mysterious conversation, he realises that he can't trust anyone, not even his best friend...

This book kicks off the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series from Rick Riordan like a champion. The characters are well rounded, the mythology accurate and engaging and the plot twisty enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. I thoroughly enjoyed this modern take on the old classics and I can tell you that the series just keeps getting better and better.

This is an amazing story of a fast-paced quest for a young hero and his friends to save the world, and I highly recommend reading this if you love fantasy, mythology and action filled stories. I love how Riordan has updated the gods and monsters for the 21st century. I was lost in Percy's world, and couldn't put the book down! I've seen the movie, but the book version is actually quite different, and it came to life in my imagination just as much as the movie. (I recommend reading the book before seeing the movie, as the movie can spoil your imagination when reading this)

Percy Jackson and his friends, family, what he discovers about himself and where his journey takes him... It's a winning combination. In a way, it's comparable to Harry Potter; he finds out he's a half-blood, he finds a second home and a family at Camp Half Blood, which is the only safe place on Earth for half-bloods. He becomes friends with a smart girl, Annabeth, and a loyal "protector", Grover, who are both lovable characters, but they are not as emotionally involving as I would have liked. I would of liked to get to know the characters more, however this story focuses on their quest rather than their relationships.

I love Percy, and I find reason for his ADHD and dyslexia inspiring. I absolutely hate how children can get labelled with ADHD and end up thinking there is something wrong with them, when really, there is nothing wrong with ADHD. In fact, ADHD has some benefits, as Percy shows us!! So if you have a child with ADHD or dyslexia, that would be a great book to share with them. Percy and his mother have such unconditional love for each other (even though we don't get to experience much of that relationship in the book) and I find it to be quite touching and inspiring. The only criticism I have to say about Percy is that I a 12 year old wielding a sword quite unbelievable. When I read this book, I pictured him as a couple of years older.

Percy Jackson's story will stay with you forever.

I love the story, which deserves 5 stars, and I will DEFINITELY read the next book. The writing is good, the characters are funny, and even though I was able to guess who the "bad guys" were fairly early on, it was still an engaging read.

The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is due to several glaring and distracting transcription errors. They occur later in the book, but they definitely threw me out of the flow of the story. One of these is an issue with dialogue and there are a number of places where articles such as "a" and "the" are left out. Not the worst I've ever seen, but for a widely and professionally published book (rather than someone's self-published manuscript) I tend to find these kind of issues unacceptable.

I loved it! The book 'Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief' is a book about Greek mythology.
Percy's a very brave figure. He's also a very selfless person, though his life is one great big mess. And I loved Annabeth, too. She's so much more interesting in the book than she is in the movies. Clarisse, the daughter of Ares and even Ares himself, don't even play a part in the movie, which made me a little sad. Grover, the satyr is an awesome character and I personally love his life ambition, becoming a searcher and looking for Pan himself.
My advise: read the book first, before you watch the movie.
A big praise for Rick Riordan !!!
