Editorial Reviews

Produced by Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon), The Lights From The Chemical Plant , Robert Ellis's 2nd album continues his journey into folk music he began 3 years ago. The songs on the new album, which range from the majestic string-adorned title track to noir pop rock and somber confessionals, both show Ellis' growth and the various sides of this multidimensional songwriter. Ellis recently told Rolling Stone The Lights From The Chemical Plant is "stylistically ambiguous," as he is inspired by a wide variety of artists. "On this record I was trying to channel everything from Paul Simon

Robert Ellis has a sweet, slightly nasal tenor twang that could, if not cut entirely through glass, at least give it a good scratch. His lyrics are intelligent, poignant and sweet, and the musical lines are a cut above today's predictable (boring) commercial C&W tunes. He's an old-style country crooner. My favorite song on this album is "TV Song," about a young man whose heroes were television stars, probably because his character's father was absent in his childhood. I also enjoy "Still Crazy After All These Years," a completely different rendition than Paul Simon's original.

I may be biased because I met Robert at Houston' International Festival a couple of years ago, and found him pleasant and polite toward his elder fan. But there's just something outside the box about this young man's music that captivates me even though I'm not at all enamored with today's C&W artists or music.

This is a pretty good album. Combination of country/folk/blues. Reminds me of a more country Slade Cleaves. 30% of the songs are outstanding, 30% are pretty good and 30% kind of weak. Worth the money especially if you can weed out the few weak tracks.

I love this cd. I saw Robert open up for Richard Thompson Electric Trio - no easy task in itself, and he pulled off these songs and others with a aplomb.

it took awhile, but at the right moment, this disc was the sleeper/creeper that really snuck up on me.

If you are a fan of the highly original, somewhat quirky, songwriter genre, you'll love this

Heard Robert Ellis for the first time after one of my friends shared a song from this cd, "Only Lies". I'm not into C&W, but sometimes an artist or group does songs that can easily crossover to Pop, and this one did that for me. I've been known to buy a cd for one song, but Ellis has several songs that have caught my interest, and I am sure the longer I listen to it, the more I will like.

I purchased this on a whim after reading a review in a local newspaper. What a great set of songs, especially the title track. Mr. Ellis's lyrics are heartfelt, and the songs cover all the various styles of Americana. And the cover of Still Crazy After All These Years is an absolute killer. This disc is in constant play in my car. Absolutely recommended.

This album is quite a departure from his earlier straight-up country efforts. Like a cross between Danny O'Keefe and Blaze Foley this mix of original songs and covers sounds new and original throughout, with catchy tunes and thought-provoking lyrics that each evoke a different mood and place and story.

I honestly don't know anything about this fella, I was only told of him from a friend. Thank goodness.

I don't know who writes the lyrics - whether it's himself or someone else - but, what I do know is that he tells the stories with a beautiful voice accompanied by wonderful electric/steel/slide guitar and soft percussion. If I was to compare him to any other artists, I would travel back to the early 70's and say Lobo, Harry Chapin, and possibly Gilbert O'Sullivan.

I can only suggest to 'not let this pass you by!'. Highly recommended

I loved his previous record and like this one pretty well, but will say that it is the type of things that grows on you. You have to put it on in the car or in your house and just let it play all the way through to truly get something out of it. If you skip around looking for catchy songs you won't really find it. His voice is excellent and clear and some of the guitar licks (like the start of TV Song) are very interesting. It is not at all country, like the last, but it is true Robert Ellis.
