Editorial Reviews

"Lights Out" was an early television series based on the eerie dramatizations of the popular 1930s radio show. The broadcasts made writer and director Arch Oboler a household name synonymous with the macabre. It was brought to network television between 1949 and 1952. A precursor to shows like "Twilight Zone," "Night Gallery" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Lights Out" is a chilling remnant of old-fashioned ghost story-telling.

Another Country: A modern-day pianist falls madly in love with a beautiful girl who claims to have known Beethoven.

For Release Today: A master of black magic casts a fatal spell on his romantic rival.

Mrs. Manifold: The widow who owns an ocean-side inn is tortured by a ghost.

The Deal: In order to satisfy his greedy, materialistic wife, a man unwittingly makes a pact with the Devil.

Lights Out Volume 7 is an early anthology series from the 1950's. Yvonne De Carlo guest stars in Another Country. A mystery involving an alluring woman who claims to have known Beethoven. Fans of Yvonne De Carlo will like this the most. From 1952, and Yvonne is stunningly beautiful. Another episode has Anne Bancroft as the guest star, who defeats the devil with love. She performs billed as Anne Marno however ot is Anne Bancroft.

I normally don't list comments about Amazon purchases, but I thought in this case I would.

I bought several Alpha discs lately (Harlem features and Lights Out episodes), and about half of them were actually DVD-R's. This title is one of them. Unfortunately, it was not listed on Amazon this way.

I assume that Alpha is now "duplicating" some of their past titles rather than going through the cost of "replication." Yet sadly, even some of their packages that contain DVD-R's show the traditional DVD logo.

As for the material itself, it is what you would expect from Alpha (and even has their watermark during beginning and end credits), but I love these offerings from bygone days so much, I chose to acquire this vintage item. The disc plays okay, but of course, as a DVD-R, it won't play in some machines.

(By the way, note for the record that the following Alpha titles I purchased were actual pressed, replicated DVD's: Lights Out, Vol. 6; The Girl from Chicago; Spirit of Youth/Lucky Ghost; Where's My Man To-Nite?/Mystery in Swing; Miracle in Harlem/Ten Minutes to Live; The Bronze Buckaroo/Midnight Shadow.)

Just thought you should be fully informed…

I ordered volumes 1 thru 8 of this series quite a while ago and just got around to viewing them. I ordered the series because I listen to the original radio broadcasts of Lights Out thru the podcasts app on my cell phone. I must say that the televised version of this series does not compare or is as good as listening to them on the radio replays. Also, the quality of these DVDs are very poor, and very hard to watch. My advice is to listen to the Lights Out radio broadcasts on podcast and save your money on these poorly copied DVD versions.
