The actual mobile app has some AR elements that let you scan cards or figures into the game, but the rewards are minimal. I like that they use some AR tricks (an underused technology in kids toys and apps in my opinion), but those are also just for fun and don't add to the game. The game is OK, but nothing special. There are a million other better platformers on mobile, most of which cost $0.00 on up to $4.99 (rarely that high). So I'm not really sure who this is for. The figure also includes a stack of cards that add items in game, but can also be used for a separate and very involved table-top deck building card game. The instructions were incredibly intimidating, so I will review the tabletop game later with the full deck (also sold separately). It seems like a case of 'jack of all trades, master of none'.
It's possible to spend a fortune on other TTL games because of the sheer volume of physical toys, but in this case there are only two figures. You'd still be into it $140 for just the two toys, then another $40 for two more decks. $180 would buy you a TON of Skylanders, and an incredibly polished and deep videogame play experience. With Lightseekers, you'll have two figures that don't really do much in game after you scan them, but look neat.
I have children though - 8 years and 10 years old and my son is the older of the two and lives on Roblox and Minecraft. He also plays some Skylanders and less Infinity. I was hoping he would like this game as much as Skylanders but so far he hasn't been as enamored with it.
The AR features are seamless and well done - cards come to life and look amazing. But as others have mentioned, gameplay is not as affected as you might expect for the price tag. And you need a flying pack to truly take advantage of the figurine.
My take is that if you KNOW you love the game (it is free to download and play in the app stores) and you know what you are getting, then this might be a great value to you. Especially if you are a game figure collector. This is easily one of the best figurines out there. But if you are just buying a cool looking toy for a child, make sure this is something they want and not just something they saw a commercial for and won't actually play with. Ours isn't getting much use and I'm a little disappointed that it wasn't more compelling.
In closing, I would say that this is a well thought out, well made game and figurine / pack. But it doesn't add as much to the game as I expected and unless it is something you are especially aware of and interested in, you could easily end up disappointed. Do your homework on this before you shell out your hard-earned money. It might be just what you wanted, but it also could just as easily be underwhelming to you if you don't know what you are getting into.
My daughter likes his pose-ability and the special effects of his hammer, known as a Nitro Hammer. When you press a button on his back, there's a light effect that makes it look like it's shooting fire. You can also connect him to an app. When you connect him to the app, he says many of the same catch phrases he says as a toy (you will learn all these phrases, trust me). To fly in the game, you have to lift up the toy and pretend he's flying which is a pretty cool effect.
My son isn't a huge fan of action figures, but he likes Jax. He particularly appreciates the light effect on Jax, which is a variety of LED lights throughout his body (powered by a battery that plugs into his back). The lighting effect with his warhammer is all the more impressive because it glows when placed in Jax's claws (it's also a plug). Jax is basically a marvel of hidden electronic engineering, with plugs throughout that power all of the cool things he does. If you shake him, he'll complain. If you leave him alone for awhile, he snores loudly. He's kind of like a really angry Furby.
There's an entire card game that interacts with the app as well, which is basically a Pokemon-style battle royale. You scan the cards into the app; each produces fun AR effects through the camera's lens. The character's equipment changes in the game the more equipment you buy for Jax in real life (each one of the accessories is $15!). Given that Jax starts with just one weapon, this doesn't mean all that much.
This is one of those cool concepts that requires a substantial investment in the toys and cards.
