The story of Detective Francois "Frankie" Choteau and Kajika "Kaj" Fortier, an exotic dancer, begins when Frankie is one of the investigating detectives when Kaj's older lover commits suicide while they were arguing. When Frankie meets Kaj, he is stunned by how beautiful he is and he can't keep from staring even when he knows he shouldn't and should be working the case. Kaj is upset about his lover committing suicide, and although he loved him, he wasn't in love with him. He met Bob and they started dating three years ago. While they were close it was more a father / son or mentor relationship with sexual benefits. Kaj felt very loyal to him because he took him away from his hometown and provided guidance to help him straighten out his life, but some of the things Bob was into sexually wasn't really his thing but to each his own. Then Kaj sees Frankie and that little voice inside that had never steered him wrong told him that they could have a real future together. Maybe it was because of the shock combined with that little voice, no matter how inappropriate it was, he couldn't stop himself from flirting with Frankie and showing his interest.
Frankie had been a detective for 10 years, but he has never come out to his co-workers. The only one who knows he is gay is his best friend and partner, Kenina Porter. She is very flirty, and "to help him protect his privacy", she wanted them to act like they were dating. So they have been doing that for a while and now he wishes he hadn't started that fake relationship. Now she keeps making comments about gays and his sexual preference, like he could change it if he wanted to, that only increases when she sees his reaction to Kaj. She keeps trying to dig up evidence on Kaj to see if he is guilty of being involved with the death of Bob, even though everything at the scene, the gunpowder residue test, etc. all support his statement of events. It takes a while but finally all the questions are answered and the case is closed.
Now that the case is closed, Frankie and Kaj are free to start dating if they want, but there are some concerns. Neither wants to open themselves up to hurt, but their chemistry and attraction is off the charts, and then there is the 20 year or so age difference. I will stop here so that you can read it yourself, because it is a very good story and the start of the series.
I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book.
