This is a story about self hate self harm & how with the right person you can rise above it all. Joshua is such a lost soul. Nate's patience with Joshua is beautiful. Although a Dom/Sub story there is much more going on between these 2. Trust is so important. Looking forward to book 3.
Loved this book & great book cover. One of my very favourite series from SJD Peterson was her 'Whispering Pines" series I was so happy to see
the author is re releasing the series in bundle form in December with added new story. If you have not read this series I would recommend it.
I wasn't entirely sure that Nash could be called a Dom, as he didn't seem to have much self-control and didn't seem very certain of himself at all. Yes, I got that he was searching for someone/something and that he had an attraction to Joshua, but he went about things like a bull in a china shop, jumping to conclusions and being very judgmental.
Joshua was damaged—there's no other word for it. A sub without safe words, without limits, and into pain, pain, and more pain. We didn't entirely get an explanation of why he felt so unworthy, though there was mention that he'd been on the streets since his early teens. I'm glad that towards the end of the book he was getting help, but I'm not convinced that he'd stick with it or that the guys had anything beyond a D/s relationship.
I couldn't picture these guys together, sorry, and other than D/s scenes, there wasn't even one that was entirely reciprocal. The tale ended with the leads trying to pursue a relationship, but it's not one that I'd call love or romance.
ARC courtesy of DSP and Bayou Book Junkie for my reading pleasure.
Joshua claims he seeks peace but he can only find that through intense scenes that include unlimited pain. He knows and accepts that this may lead to his death but feels powerless to overcome his addiction (his word) to pain.
When Nash sees Joshua being treated in a manner that Nash thinks is abuse he becomes determined to claim Joshua as his own and train Joshua to be not only his sub but a happy man. Easier said than done. Much easier said. While Doms are expected to push subs to their limits it is Joshua who pushes Nash.
It takes a great deal of patience and hope for Nash to even begin to accomplish what he sets out to do with Joshua. It takes Joshua a tremendous amount of trust and bravery to allow Nash to change what Joshua expects not only from his Dom but from himself.
With all they had to overcome in this story it is no surprise that the ending is an HFN rather than an HEA, but for now that is enough.
