For the very young, and the young at heart!
Come meet one of the most industrious creatures of the
American Southwest—a small mammal from the rodent order of animals: the packrat.
On this cold winter’s holiday eve, Thistletoe Q. Packrat sat in the parlor, his chin in his paws. The cupboards were bare. Poor Mama. There would be no holiday feast this year.
A sound like thunder rumbled in the distance. Rum-dilly, rum-dilly, rum. It grew louder . . . RUM-DILLY . . . and louder . . . RUM-DILLY, RUM-DILLY, RUM.
Mama Packrat held her ear to the burrow floor. “Law, if it ain't the sound of hoofbeats. The cowboys are on the move again, herdin’ the rancher’s cattle! No telling what vittles those wranglers are carryin’ in their saddlebags.”
Thistletoe daydreamed about the scraps of food left behind. All the fixins’ Mama would need for a right proper holiday feast.
It wouldn’t be easy. Finding the scraps and bringing them back home would be tricky. He had no idea if he could do it. He would have to try. That’s all there was to it.
The stars in the sky–listeners of dreams, grantors of wishes–are the only stars in eleven-year-old Abi’s life . . . until she meets a black and white Border Collie named Star, who helps her solve a mystery. Herbert, the owner of the country inn where she is staying, dies of a heart attack. His wife, Dee, is left to run things, and the inn soon falls in disrepair. Herbert’s greedy brother, Norman, tells Sheriff Smart that Dee is to blame for his brother’s death and should be put in jail. He has arranged for a wrecking crew to demolish the inn to make way for a shopping center he wants to build. With only forty-eight hours left, Herbert’s ghost appears to Abi and asks for her help. Abi and her new friend, Jess, search high and low for answers. Can Abi prove Dee’s innocence and save the inn in time?
Has your child ever felt left behind by older siblings or friends at school? Waddles is an entertaining story that will give children the courage to keep trying and never give up. At last, they will succeed, just like Waddles. At the end of the story, readers are encouraged to learn about mallard ducks and to feed waterfowl—and all wild animals—a natural diet.
Waddles’ story is inspired by a mama mallard duck and her nine ducklings who came to live in the Wilson’s family pool in Centerville, Ohio.
