-Very bare bones
-Is inexpensive for an audio interface and feels cheap too
-The port to plug in the power chord in the back is terribly loose
-I find that it can be vulnerable to static that's most likely due to the loose port in the back. Sometimes when I'm hearing interference because of the UX1 I unplug and replug the chord into the loose port which has ocassionally restarted my computer.
-The drivers and the whole Line 6 software ordeal can be a real pain sometimes
-It's simple and gets the job done
-It feels cheap which means it feels very light, which could be a positive depending on how you look at it
-Despite feeling cheap I've had it for years, and it still works without any issues
-The amp modeling, particularly for high gain amps, is probably the worst I've come across so far. If Podfarm is a selling point for you I'd reconsider. Basically no matter what you do, your distorted tones will sound painfully digital. Just check out Polyphia's first album (which was recorded with Podfarm tones) and you'll hear what I mean by "digital". The high gain amps just lack the "heat" feel of real tube amps completely.
-Setting up Podfarm and getting the full version was relatively difficult with Line 6's subpar license manager, and you are basically only allowed to have it on one computer if you plan on transferring projects between PCs.
IMPORTANT FOR THOSE LOOKING TO USE THIS TO RECORD GUITAR: From my personal experience, Podfarm DOES NOT record DI's. This means that you better hope you nailed the tone you were looking for when getting those great takes, because there's not much you can do outside of EQ and dynamics after the fact. Every other amp sim I've used have always recorded DI's into my DAW, allowing me to completely adjust the tone at anytime. However, Podfarm sends the affected signal into your DAW. Fixing a permanently destructed tone to fit the mix better would be like trying to fix a mistake in a painting: you can only add.
DI's are also very useful when dialing tones as you can adjust the tone while it's hard panned to L/R. As anyone will tell you, the characteristics of a tone will dramatically changed when it's hard panned.
You could record a dry signal DI into the DAW then apply Podfarm to the track as an insert, but then you couldn't monitor yourself as you track the guitar with the tone you'll use. This also means that it'll be very hard to hear yourself play when tracking against an establish mix as monitoring a dry signal is very quiet which is why you want that tone present when recording. Having an instance of the plug-in alongside the DAW is a must as you'll probably experience severe latency if you monitored with the tone through the DAW. When running Podfarm alongside the DAW, I end up recording whatever tone I've got in the running app.
-The clean tones are satisfactory. You can create some pretty fun patches with a clean tone and the various effects pedals.
-Lots of effects
I'm happy with the purchase, but in hindsight there's better options out there (Focusrite). For the "bundle", I would suggest you get the Focusrite priced on the same level as the UX1. Misha Mansoor uses the simple Scarlett for his home recording and his tone is one of the best in modern metal. To substitute for Podfarm, Native Instrument's Guitar Rig 5 is the vastly superior counterpart, but there's also Toontrack's EZmix software, which is cheap and has pretty nice amp modeling for the price. I'd take a look at all of those products before making your decision.
It's a million times cooler than you can even imagine, so let's get to the review.
You already know that guitar amplifiers can be really expensive, and then they are loud. Loud is ok but if you have to be quiet it's kind of a hassle. But the Pod Farm is really cheap in comparison, and it's literally like having every amp, pedal, effect and gizmo under the sun at your fingertips.
I can't begin to explain how cool the sounds are that you can get out of a Pod Farm. Not only are there endless amounts of user tones that you can easily download and play in 10 seconds, but the ones that come with it are endless. A lot of people talk about latency, so if that is your concern I will address it now.
There is no latency at all. If you close your eyes and play using headphones, you will have no idea that you are playing guitar through a gizmo, and not a really nice amp.
You may be thinking that the effects are cheesy right? Wrong! Again, I can not explain the quality of this device. It produces the richest, creamiest guitar sounds you could ever want. And if you happen to download or create a sound that isn't quite how you want it, you can always tweak it to your perfection.
Distortion and effects don't make you a better player, everyone knows that. But what nobody mentions is that you SOUND a million times better. That is important for more than just playing for fun though. If you sound better, you will want to play (practice) more, and you will get better.
I play my Pod Farm every single day. Even if I don't feel good I still play it for a few minutes. I play it through a pair of Bose headphones that are about 8 years old, so hardly the newest and best headphones out there, and the sound is simply amazing.
If you are on the fence about buying this, just do it. I promise you can not go wrong, and you will be absolutely blown away by the quality.
** Notes **
A lot of people talk about how the actual physical device is "cheap". Well, who cares! It's just a thing you plug into, it doesn't need to be of the highest quality. Also, it's not cheap, it's just hollow and light because it's just a portal for your guitar cord.
Yes, installation is a bit confusing, but not because it's technical, just because the instructions they give are not super clear. But you will figure it out, and be playing in no time.
I hope you love this thing as much as I do, because I will never be without it!
I've been using the UX1 for about three or four months now and have really grown to love it. I can get a fantastic variety of sounds to suit the style and mood every song I want to play.
Top international reviews
If you're on Windows 10, like me, you need to search for the Ux1 driver, download that from Line 6 then run the updates.
I was about to buy a Blackstar TVP 30 but my wife wasn't happy with me making too much noise so I can now practise with my headphones on.... You'll need a 6mm jack for those if you haven't got one. As a U2 and Hendrix fan I was able to get both the delay of Edge and the Hendrix wahwah from the bundle that's included. Very impressed.
For someone looking to use a PC as an amp, this is amazing. It has over twenty virtual amps, and a shiteload of effects. On top of that, they have about 500 pre-set sounds for songs you might want to try playing. There is no audible delay unless you put on a cab. If you ever hear hissing, it can be sorted 99% of the time by adjusting the various gain and volume knobs on the box itself and within the software. You can even plug in and use a bass (they have bass amps) and it works with minimal/no hissing. The software works on my desktop PC, and on my mac laptop - so if I really want to, I can use it as an amp on the move. It also acts effectively as a guitar and bass amp, which saves a load of money on buying separate amps. For bedroom players, you can't ask for much more.
It only gets a 4-star review for two reasons. The software support hasn't been great, especially with the switch over to windows 10. The site organisation is just kinda awkward. Also, the song pre-sets aren't very well organised. They could have titled them as [Song - Artist] but they just put the song title or a related phrase.
The system comes with 6mm jack sockets on the front for the guitar and headphones. So if you have a standard 3mm headphone jack/speaker wire, you need to grab an adapter off amazon for a couple of quid. The guitar plugs straight into the left socket. Headphones/speakers go into the right.
The guitar signal goes into the box, which feeds through USB into the PC. The PC software (Pod Farm 2) processes the sound and adds on whatever amps/effects are needed. It sends the processed sound back to the UX1 box, where you connect your headphones/speakers. I plug my surround sound in, so it plays through those. If I need quiet, I switch that out for some headphones.
If you have studio monitors like me you can also use the interface as an output for monitors, as there is 2 jack outputs on the back.
Thank you :D
- Registrazioni home facilitate
- Software in dotazione (soggettivo)
