Without a doubt, the concept, the technology, and function of this amp is brilliant. It is quite a genius idea, and it is well carried out. Basically, it does everything that it says it does really well.
If you are either: a guitarist who likes to play a great variety of music requiring a variety of tones, a practicing musician who likes to play guitar along with backing tracks or along with your favorite mp3's, a guitarist that wants to bundle the function of a unique amp along with being a wonderful bluetooth speaker system for any electronic device.... if you are looking for those things, this is the amp for you.
If you are either: a musician who needs to bring a powerful amp to a gig, a musician who loves to rely on great pedals to give a variety of tones, a musician looking for that one big tube tone from a powerful amp.... this probably won't be the amp for you. However, you will still get a real kick out of the functions of this amp. In fact, this could still be one of your favorite toys, just not your all encompassing "go to" tube amp.
I assume that if you are reading this, you already know what the amp is supposed to do. I'll take this time to tell you what it does really well.
Bluetooth Speaker for your Electronic Device.
This is a fantastic speaker for connecting your bluetooth device. It will fill very large rooms or outdoor areas with sound if you like. It really does give a very clear sound at a very high volume.
It is by no means surround sound, and although it will fill a room, it doesn't necessarily spread the spectrum of the sound like separated stereo speaker system would. It handles a big low and heavy bass tone, and it also clearly articulates the treble tones.
A Tone Matching System
Let me be clear. This amp does not have a technology that hears the guitar tone in your favorite songs and somehow matches it. (I feel the need to make that clear, because a few people that I know have actually thought that.) Based on the tags that users give to the tones that have been made by users and uploaded to the cloud the app will suggest tones that match the artist and guitarist that you are playing. You can either choose a song that you have in your itunes library on your device, and the app will automatically suggest a match. OR, you can play music with any bluetooth device though the amp and do a 'tone search' in the app to find a suggested tone for that song/band/guitarist. You don't need to use itunes to find your tones, but you will have to do a tone search through the app.
I personally bought the amp because I play a variety of music, normally just practicing at home at decently family friendly volumes. I had a tube amp, and a couple hundred dollars worth of pedals, but could not get a combination that would get me the tone of more than one or two of my favorite artists.
In particular, I could not get a convincing early Ty Tabor tone from King's X. I know guys who have spent thousands to get a really good Tabor tone, and I was not close with the gear I had purchased. Sooo, I tried the amplifi 150. I did a tone search for King's X and for Ty Tabor. It suggested about 6 tones that were related to King's X songs. It also included some BB King tones and Kings of Leon tones. (Neither of which I am searching for at this point.) I chose the tone that someone suggested for the solo on the song "it's Love". Keep in mind that I have tried pedals and amps and different modeling amps in order to try and recreate the tones, and to be totally honest, NONE of those came as close to the tone as this one did. AFTER a search that took no longer than 30 seconds and ONE CLICK. I did some minor tweaks by adding some compression and changing the eq a bit and boom, it is the most convincing Ty Tabor tone that I have ever played along with.
I played some of my favorite songs for a while and loved it.
After a while, I decided to see how convincing of a Jack White tone I could find. I found a good one, tweaked it for a few minutes and had a lot of fun playing it.
After a while, I decided that I wanted to play some Metallica riffs. Found a great tone. Had a great time.
NOW KEEP IN MIND THAT I FOUND ALL OF THIS WITHIN THE FIRST HOUR AND A HALF THAT I OWNED THE AMP.
The ease of editing tones by using your ipad or iphone is unmatched. THERE IS NO DEVICE THAT CAN EDIT TONES AS EASILY, COMPLETELY AND QUICKLY AS THE AMPLIFI.
The ease of finding pre-made tones is unmatched. THERE IS NO DEVICE OR SYSTEM THAT HAS THE LIBRARY OF GOOD TONES THAT THE AMPLIFI HAS.
The ease of playing along with backing tracks using your own music player is unmatched.
If you desire to find a variety of great tones, edit and create your own easily, and play along with your own music. This amp is perfect for you and has fewer limitations than any other system that reports to do even half of those tasks.
If you are looking for a gigging amp...
If you are looking for a powerful tube amp...
Then you are probably barking up the wrong tree with the amplifi.
I personally love how this amp looks, but even the handle on the amp suggests that this is not the amp that you want to be lugging all over with you. The exterior seems somewhat durable, but if you are loading this thing in and out of your van with other gear, it is going to get scratched and scarred easily.
Unless you are plugging this straight into the PA system, I can't imagine a great application for gigging other than at informal jam sessions in your own living room.
Let me make it clear:
This amp is for the guitarist that wants to have fun with a variety of tones.
It is for guitarists who like to be social and share tones. (Please share your tones and tweak tones and reshare them. Please rate all of the tones that you try.)
This amp is for guitarists who like to play great tones at low volumes.
This amp is for guitarists who would like to have a great bluetooth soundsystem.
This amp is for guitarists who would like to keep your entire amp and guitar system in the living room or bedroom without cluttering everything else up and looking neat and put together.
Again when you get this amp, please keep it social, share your tone, rate as many as you try. Tweak and share your tweaks.
And have a great time doing it!
Pros ... love the blue tooth speaker for other devices... plenty of cool rigs, cabs, effects, etc to keep you busy for hours. Easy to visually see all of your options when tweaking.
Cons... can only match tones to the songs in your iTunes. If you don't have a big library on iTunes, you must jam along with jam tracks from YouTube or a a separate device altogether. Switching between the Amplifi app and other apps can make your amp unable to be picked up for Bluetooth, and I usually have to tester the amp for it to get picked up.
All in all, very cool idea. Great sounding amp, not gig loud, but loss enough for practice for sure.
I replaced a 75w spyder I picked up a while back.
I have an EMG 81/85 set up, and the quality this amp puts out is amazing. Tone is crystal.
As a stand alone, I'd say it's competitive.
The gimmick is the AMPLIFi. The app let's you customize to your hearts content. Honestly, it's overwhelming how much there is to play with. I've found FANTASTIC set ups for what I like to play. You can also go online via the app and download presets other people have made, which is hit or miss, but a great starting point.
The only thing I didn't like was A. Not being able to use the amp with Android out of the box. You have to update the firmware via a USB Type B cable and your PC, OR, you can use an iPhone to update it, then it's compatible with Apple & Android.
There aren't a WHOLE lot of quality presets available... I mean if you look for something obscure, it's gonna be hit or miss finding an uploaded tone. And even then, a lot of the tones, to me, aren't quite there. Trying to match the riff from "Comfortably Numb" via the Tone Finder gave a lot of hopefuls but only 1 or 2 were close enough for comfort.
All in all, I love the amp. If more people actively used the app and they keep working on the tone matching, there wouldn't be a lot of reason not to grab this vs $500 in pedals.
Would love to see Line 6 updating the firmware to make use of the USB port for a PC interface and or recording - that would put the icing on the cake!
Also, a digital interface for the Variax guitars would have been nice, but again, this is not a pro amp.
