Editorial Reviews

Under cover of darkness, Bryant (David Carradine) is smuggling Mexicans across the Rio Grande, when border patrol pilot Mitch spots them. A shootout ensues. Meanwhile, Chuck (Scott Wilson) and Jonathan arrive in Laredo in search of adventure, Chuck is a nephew of Bryant. They hook up with Mitch who guides them across the border into Mexico, to Boys-Town, a prostitution compound. There they meet Bryant recovering from his wounds and the girl who attends to him; Engracia (Victoria Abril). Chuck immediately falls for her, not realizing she is the ex-girlfriend of Mitch. When Chuck decides to join the Border Patrol and return to the US for the Academy, he proposes to Engracia. When she is denied entry into the US because of her past, Chuck, with the help of his uncle, decides to smuggle her across. When Mitch shows up at their doorstep, wearing Border patrol uniform, Chuck has few choices and on his graduation day, she is deported. Chuck must sacrifice everything he's worked for in order to be with the woman he loves. He crosses into Mexico to be reunited with her, but he is destined to have one more confrontation with Mitch on the banks of the Rio Grande.

Too bad we'll never get to see this film in it's original form unless we fly to Spain. I think it's US distributor cut it with a rusty axe. Some of what's left is quite good, but David Carradine is really a minor character and has little screen time. He is only featured prominently on the packaging as he is the only actor in the film, besides maybe Scot Wilson from "In Cold Blood") whose name name Americans would recognize. Still worth a viewing, and I give it four stars not based on it current US released form, but on the obvious intent of the film, which was made by a director who quite a highly respected filmmaker in Spain.

It was a halfway decent movie on VHS, but with a bit of c'mon now you expect me to believe that? But this is ridculous---badly edited with many of the scenes cut out. Buy the VHS tape if you can find it.

The original movie deserves 5 stars. This 2010 DVD release gets 0 stars. I've always enjoyed this movie, have had the VHS tape for years, but refused to pay for the overpriced out-of-print 2000 DVD release. So when I saw this 2010 DVD re-release, I bought it immediately, only to be disappointed with the hatchet job that Vanguard Cinema has done to it. I counted at least five scenes that were cut (some with David Carradine, most with Victoria Abril), and the result is a watered-down PG rated version of this movie. Also, there are no extras on the DVD, it's just the movie in a straight 4x4-1.33 transfer. I thought that by purchasing this DVD, I would have saved myself the trouble of transferring my old VHS copy to DVD, but it looks like I will end up doing that anyway, since this DVD version is just too cut up and edited. If you want to see this movie in its entirety, in its original form, then skip this DVD and buy the old VHS tape version. I never saw the 2000 DVD release, so I can't comment on it.
