As a reader, I am probably a writer's worst nightmare. I have a very small attention span and if a book doesn't capture me within the first page or two, I tend to let it go and move on to something else. I am also very wary of new authors, but if a new author can manage to reel me in, I devour everything he/she writes.
That said, it has been a long time since the first line of a book captured my attention, and refused to let it go. With a line like, "By the time they reached the house it was already on fire," how can you not be completely captivated?
Of course, readers know that it takes more than a great first line to make a great book. Linger: Dying is a Wild Night delivers. It offers a strong female protagonist, something desperately needed in this genre, a story line that is, for lack of a better word, intense, and a thrilling conclusion that will leave you breathless and wanting more. Linger will appeal to fans of the paranormal, those who like their horror a bit more extreme, and to anyone who just loves a compelling story with characters you won't soon forget.
This first book sets up the story and characters--consider it the "pilot episode"--and it's terrific. Note that while each book in the series is by "Edward Fallon," this is a pseudonym of five different authors--each author pens one of the books and brings something unique to every entry. Highly recommended!
Linger: Dying Is A Wild Night is a captivating story that draws the reader into the suspense. Once you begin reading you'll have to finish. The characters are intriguing and likable. The plot twists and sends the reader into surprising directions, while the fluent writing of Edward Fallon easily pulls you along for the ride. It is an excellent first story for the Linger series, comfortably setting the stage for future adventures.
I liked the paranormal aspects of the storyline, using the boy Christopher as the medium, from whom all else stems. The supernatural occurrences are described in a succinct and believable manner, and make one stop to ponder some questions. What are our minds capable of? Can we experience more if we push limitations? How can we use our minds for good? I always enjoy a story that stretches my imagination. Like any good suspense drama, we have gruesome murderers who you'll like to hate, as well as a great last minute reveal.
Last but not least, there is a compelling protagonist who will win you over. She is Detective Lieutenant Kate Messenger, a strong willed, decisive, woman who rolls with the tide; willing to do what needs to be done to find a killer, the beast. Encouraged by her actions, the truth is revealed. She stands as a woman who won't be pushed around or tolerate bad behavior, and she manages bad situations with intelligence. During the storyline, you see her character grow, learning with each new development. I whole heartily recommend this book and looking forward to the next.
The honest truth is I had a blast reading this book. At its heart, this is a fast-paced murder mystery. It also has supernatural elements in the form of telepathy.
The characters are compelling and easy to sympathize with. The murder itself was gruesome enough to be interesting. The supernatural elements were both exciting and creepy.
Linger: Dying Is A Wild Night was well worth my time. The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that it ended. I’m excited to read the next book in the series.
The best compliment I can offer this book (and series) is I’d have thought it worth purchasing. Had I downloaded the sample of Dying is a Wild Night, I’d have absolutely purchased the remainder of the book when the sample ended. And I’d have been satisfied with my purchase.
As much as this book scared me at times, I could not put it down.
The plot is suspenseful and mysterious, and the characters are well developed with flaws, and backstories that will pique your interest upon introduction, leaving the reader to want to know more about each of them.
This is the first book in the LINGER series and I look forward to next ones.
I was provided with an advance reader's copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
