Berardinelli has done a great job in creating Janelle. As a character she is believable and complex and as her memories slowly return to her she becomes ever richer. I cannot stress how impressive it is that the author was able to realistically inhabit a character so different from himself. Well-seasoned authors often struggle with the same thing.
The magical system is interesting and unique. It shares some elements with the magic of Ayberia from “The Last Whisper of the Gods” (Fitting, because an Easter egg shows the two series exist in the same multiverse), but the mechanisms are different. I’m very interested to see how the use of magic affects the series moving forward.
The plot is simple, but rewarding. It functions well for an introductory book and there are hints that things are going to become more complex quickly. By the end of the book our protagonist is just finding her footing in the world and there are many directions she might be pulled.
Not everything is positive, however. The book is written in first-person perspective of which I am generally not a fan. I find that it limits the scope of the fantasy world viewable to the reader and, because the protagonist is the narrator, Berardinelli too often fails to “Show, don’t tell”. I don’t think he can or should change the perspective in the remaining books of the series, but hopefully he can find ways to mitigate these issues.
I also at times felt like the pace of the book was a little rushed. More words spent on deep description of the settings would have immersed me further in the world. Despite this, the Western Wilds do feel inhabited and the well-developed characters fill much of the gap.
Over all, “The Lingering Haze” is a welcome successor to “The Last Whisper of the Gods”. It will be enjoyed by fantasy fans of all ages. I’m looking forward to the sequel.
Berardinelli's previous trilogy, "The Last Whisper of the Gods." It's shorter, more action oriented, and suitable for younger readers (maybe
11+) - no cussing or sex. It has all the tropes one expects from epic
fantasy, including magic, monsters, and a Medieval setting. There's also a big mystery that is only partially unwrapped that involves a multiverse idea. Although the book does a good job introducing the characters and establishing the setting, it's obviously only the beginning of a much longer, more involved story and, as such, will likely work better as a part of a whole than as a stand-alone.
Fast-paced and hard to put down, I got through it in two sittings.
