Being given a tool without some indication of what it is, how it works, why it works, and what happens when it is effectively put to work ensures that the tool will probably be set down. The potential user will go back to doing the work the same way it has always been done. I say this with confidence as I look at my bookshelf and see a number of professional how-to books that did not engage me past the preface or the introduction to the first chapter. 

In exploring why, three things became evident. First, I was drawn to many of the books on my shelf because of the author or title. Second, I did not take the necessary time to evaluate whether my identified need was addressed by the purpose of the book or in the content developed for the author's "target audience". Third, despite a positive connection between the purpose of the book and my need, I wasn't necessarily committed to the work required to see the positive outcome I desired.
