Linksys products have gone down hill over the past few years but since I already had a linksys wireless router I decided to buy this range extender to expand my wireless network to reach areas of my house where the signal was really weak. After receiving the extender I did a site survey on my house to see where a good location to put the extender would be.

The device is extremely easy to setup so if you are a novice when dealing with networking equipment. The wizard, which you are forced to use, quickly finds your 2.4 and 5GHz networks. Once you have logged into each network the extender auto configures and you now can add the new SSID's to the extender and you should be able to connect to the Extender. Key word here is should. I was unable to ever connect to the device and was always forced to get on my primary wireless router. After calling into tech support, which is a horrible experience. You could tell the tech was reading from a script and didn't really try to help resolve my issues. After 1.5 hours of dealing with support it was determined that the product that I purchased was defective and that they would send me a new one. Ok, i thought that there was potential for the product at this point and I waited for my RMA'ed device. After 2 WEEKS, I finally got a new extender from linksys, which by the way, I had to pay to ship them the broken device.

Take 2. I put the extender in place and configure it to join my existing network. This time I'm able to connect to the extender which was farther than I got the first time. After about 15 minutes of being connected to the extender my connection kept dropping. I would lose my network and it would then go to the primary wireless. To solve this manually deleted my primary network to stay on the extender.

This this was a pain in the rear end to setup. Sure, you can follow the basic prompts and have an insecure access point. Alternatively you can pull your hair out while trying to lock it down. The problem seems to be that once it's setup there is no way to administer it or make any changes. Navigating to 192.168.1.1 takes you to your main WiFi access point and 192.168.1.240 takes you nowhere. Furthermore, the instructions are on one tiny card and the manufacturers website offers very little help.

* NOTE that a firmware update may correct this problem and render the following information obsolete:

1) Turn off the WiFi on your computer and directly connect to the extender with the Ethernet cable provided.

2) Point your web browser to 192.168.1.1/network/sta_network.shtml

The default administrative password is admin. (See the security problem?)

3) Once logged into the access point, go to the Administration tab and change the password. Your browser will ask for your new password and take you back to the default, basic setup process. You can now follow the step-by-step setup unless you want to make any administrative decisions.

Advanced setup:

You will need to skip the basic setup and navigate back to the link posted above in step 1.

Go to the Wireless tab and manually enter the information or click Site Survey, select your network, enter your passphrase, and click connect

You're given one last chance to name the extended network and make any changes you want. Once you save the changes 192.168.1.1 will take you to your main WiFi router until you reset the extender and start all over again. Brilliant!

I purchased this range extender mainly since I needed internet in a part of my house that I couldn't run a cable to, I thought that this product would have been a good product since it has the Linksys name on it and everything, and since I've never had a problem with Linksys products in the past. This product is a different story though. I originally purchased one of these back in Feb of 2015 and wasn't having any issues with it. About a month or so goes by and all of a sudden I started having connectivity issues. The range extender would randomly loose connection to my main Wifi router. I would have to power cycle my range extender for it connect to my Wifi network again. It would then keep a connection for a few hours or so before it would loose connectivity again. I tried re-flashing the firmware but no luck with the issue. So since I was tired of these problems, I decided to send it back to Amazon since it was still within the send back date range. They sent me a new range extender, I set it up, and works fine......for about another month or so. Then I started having connectivity issues with the devices trying to connect to the range extenders wifi network. With this range extender I tried changing the wifi network to have a different name than the main wifi router. No luck. So i tried re-flashing the firmware on this one too, and still no luck. Still would get a connectivity issue. Since this range extender was past the return period with Amazon, I decided to go through Linksys (aka Belkin) and they processed me a replacement device. This is now my third brand new device and decided to set it up and try this one. But no, still after about a month of use, this one started giving me both types of connectivity issues. Nothing would fix it.Read more ›
