The kind souls on the internet (not Linksys) suggested that the chipsets in the adapters work with Realtek drivers. So I went and downloaded and installed the driver from: realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=56&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false The Mac option is the last one at the bottom. Wifi and Network adapters restored. Ethernet appeared in Network settings.
The speed on the actual device seems to be okay, but I'm still too mad to be impressed. One star for the aggravation those stupid drivers caused, and -10 for how lazy Linksys was to not even bother doing anything about it.
Phone call to Linksys support confirms they do not support Mac latest OS, El Capitan, and seem to have no plans to update drivers.
Luckily, Linksys only rebranded a Taiwanese product, so you can get the drivers directly from RealTek
Form factor on this unit is virtually identical to the prior USB 2.0 / 10/100 Mbps version, with the only exception being the USB connection and the fact that it says Linksys instead of Cisco on it. Obviously the cord is a bit thicker, but it's still flexible enough to tuck into tight places (think USB accessory bag). An improvement they've made on this version is that you have two separate cap pieces, one for the USB connector and one for the RJ45 receptacle. Previously it was a one-piece, L-shaped deal that just didn't work and was a pain to keep snug, and which bent the thinner USB 2.0 cable at an extreme angle. Now, on this USB 3.0 version, you just put one cap on the USB cable and one on the RJ45 port and the cable can still swing free, which is great. Stores much easier this way and is less hassle to deal with.
The adapter did come with a driver CD, but you can (and I did) download the drivers from the manufacturers website, or if you prefer, a self contained installer program/wizard that will set up the drivers for you. I dumped the drivers to a flash drive and ditched the CD, highly recommend anyone else do the same.
On the whole, a great unit from a solid manufacturer and at a great price. No issues and would definitely buy it again.
