The story definitely started out strong and developed characters. It's quirky, but the main villain was nicely filled out and Lint Boy was a decent protagonist. The story definitely has enough quirks to propel you along. But I have to admit I was not completely satisfied with the straightforward resolution of the story. I felt the strong quirky ending deserved a stronger, quirkier ending. Can't say what that would be, but I wished there was a bit more twist in the ending.
That being said, I cannot wait for the kids to get their chance to read this. It is perfect for mid year readers, 8-12 who would appreciate it strangeness and it's fairytale like qualities. Despite my small problem with the ending, this definitely falls under 5 stars.
I read this to my 6 and 7 year old over two nights, having not pre read it. So at first I thought it was really cute, and then "OMG! Should I continue reading this before bed??!!" But my boys really loved the book! They liked the illustrations and unique storyline. Since there's a happy ending they seemed unfazed by the scary storyline. This would be a great book to read during Halloween.
Ms Leijten has good character development but she borrows much. The story begins with an original creation of Lint Boy and Lint Bear. From there it tries to become a modern Grimms Fairy tale with the two main characters off on an adventure who become captives of a mean, evil villian and her sidekick dog. The old woman, Tortura, resembles Cruella de Vil. Tortura is sadistic. She captures dolls and turns them into her powerless victims. The teachable moment of the story is when the captured dolls, begin to talk and share their stories as they build friendship and start cooperating. Tortura dress downs and mutilations are homage to Tim Burton drawings and humor. Unlike Grimms Fairy Tales, the story is a little choppy. Most young readers won’t notice the chop but it can lead to readers just putting the book down and moving on to a new activity.
Ms Leijten may become a good children’s novelist with the guidance of a good editor. I’ve read an advanced copy. I hope the author revises this version before publication. I’ll be interested in seeing her next book.
Children may not yet draw that line from fiction to reality, and after finishing the book my son immediately asked why the old woman was so mean and what made her so. Unfortunately, the book does not offer much explanation in that regard, and even the ending was only an escape from that answer. As it is, it leaves room for your own imagination and thoughts, which can be a good thing as well. However, I recommend to read this book together with your child so you are able to discuss it afterwards and help them draw their own conclusions.
A different and thought-provoking variation of the hero vs. monster theme which shows that more can be achieved if you have friends and hold together.
(Thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for a copy of the book, all opinions are my own)
