If you are new to linux, or maybe don't spend a lot of time in Bash, then this is a great reference. It covers the major fundamentals of working with the command line, the layout of each section is also very intuitive and easy to follow. It is affordable and portable, and makes a great gift (I have purchased three additional copies for gifting) to a new linux user.

Easy to understand, has most commands I've needed to look up over the last few weeks as I come up to speed on helping to manage our Linux servers. Only deducted 1 star is it is a bit old and the author has a new one coming out soon (April 2013 I believe).

I am a long time Ubuntu user, but this book has been a tremendous resource for learning infrequently used command and command options. The book is fantastic for both seasoned and new users because it is well organized and well written. Syntax options are fully documented with working examples and the explanations are concise, but meaningful.

A gift for my cousin, the family computer guru! His comments were that at first, he didn't think he would like this, BUT, upon closer reading, he found that it perfectly fit his needs. It's one of those books that it may take a little while to get into, but turned out to be one of his fav "work" books.

I knew nothing about Linux, when I got this book, so I was reading it along with Linux In 24 hours, and I have to say that this book is just the perfect size for me. If you need a reference book, then you are probably looking for something heavier than this.

For a none programmer it is still a little hard to read and understand the instructions in this (Easy to use) book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Geniales Nachschlagewerk für Newbies

Servus angehenden/ erfahrene Linuxer,

(25/9/2010) Note - it's two and a half years since I posted the following review, but I've come back to say that I wish I could give this little book *another* 5 stars. I still use it regularly, and turn to it more often than any other Linux book in my collection.
(18/4/2013 - STILL occasionally turning to this little gem, and very much looking forward the the new improved edition later this year!
=================================================================

I made the switch to Linux about a year ago. I'd tried (many times) in the past, but Linux on a desktop just wasn't ready for a non-techie user like me. Then new flavours of Linux (like Mint Linux) came along and changed all that.

While you can use Linux just as a straight Windows replacement and just 'do stuff', there's something about it that draws you in, and makes you want to know more about your computer... So I quickly found that I'd acquired a growing library of Linux books.

They all have their uses, but for anyone who wants to start exploring the Linux command line, none of them can touch this little gem. I still use it all the time, both as a reference to look stuff up, and occasionally just to work through a chapter and remind myself of some useful commands.

Many of my other Linux books were expensive - this one wasn't. If you just want to scratch the surface of what the command line can do and learn a few vital commands, this book is for you.

If you want to become a Linux guru and power user, doing all sorts of geeky hacker-looking stuff, then this book is for you too.

I really can't recommend it highly enough. Just buy it now! Click that button! You know you want to!!
