Lion of Babylon is far more than a thriller involving kidnappings of three Americans, an Iraqi, and Iraqi children. As is usual with Bunn's books, the characters are extremely memorable and endearing. Marc Royce becomes a lion (hero) not only to Iraqis, but also to the reader. Equally heroic is a faithful, caring Arab Christian, Sameh el-Jacobi. The gradual building of trust between Marc and Sameh is a beautiful thing, as are the incredible frendship and teamwork of Americans and Iraqis in the book's endeavors. And the theme of faith throughout the book is understated, but clear.
Other personal benefits for the reader: some necessary detail of Iraq's history, the description of Baghdad sites, a clearer understanding of the continual atmosphere of fear and danger, the inclusion of both young and older characters, and a basic understanding of Arab spirit and thinking.
Marc's willingness to do the right thing, no matter what the cost, is crucial for all of us (in less exciting circumstances!), as is Sameh's conclusion: "All my life, my first instinct upon meeting a person has been to identify their background... I name them as American, Sunni, Shia, Persian, Kurd. But that moment in the [underground] church, we were all simply people in need. Imperfect and wounded and broken. And I saw the answer was Jesus." Good words for all of us!
I was instantly captivated from the beginning of the novel, "The current Administration in Washington is fractured. Top to bottom. I've never seen such in-fighting. Worse than Nixon. It's a virus that's eaten into every dept, including Intel. They need a voice they could trust. Someone who's beyond politics. I advise what Intel is fact, what is biased and what is pure political lard."
"Who watches the watcher?" Marc Royce asks.
"Everyone" Ambassador Walton replies.
Marc Royce was on a leave of absence from the Bureau taking care of his wife during her illness when Ambassador Walton dismissed him from intelligence. Now he wanted him back? His friend Alex was missing. They think it had to do with an issue tied to the Green Zone Chapel - the underground church in Baghdad! Marc heard enough from the Ambassador - Personal matters aside, He'd take on the mission.
The heart of the story shines out in the middle of the action, drama and complex plot. Davis Bunn worked and lived in the Middle East and Israel. He's very familiar with the underground church there, has an understanding for the people their culture and love of the land.
Marc Royce is asked to help find his friend Alex, who's been kidnapped. This author gives the reader a visual snapshot of this region, helps them understand the traditions of the people and their history all throughout this page turner.
This is a deeply moving and memorable novel that will leave you wanting more. You'll want to read the next book in this series called Rare Earth, where Davis Bunn takes Marc Royce and the reader on another mission impossible. I highly recommend it!
I’m thankful for the review copy of a book that answers the question, “What does it mean when someone says; God has healed me from the inside out? How can I let God touch the hurts in my heart and be healed?”
Denise says, “You can only live with your heart shut down for so long. Eventually you will fight for your healing or you will die… Some even find God when their lives fall apart!....Sometimes a person has to die in order to really live. ..Hungry for something real?.. (tired of just going through the motions of life and feeling numb inside?) Want to feel alive? Seek whatever helps you rediscover that carefree childlike heart I know is in there somewhere – that is what you should be doing to Feel Alive!”
This is a walk Denise’s characters have gone on and/or just started down the path. I enjoyed this cast so much, they are fun, bold and each have been knocked around by life. Each has a different result and story to tell.
Scarlett Jo is a Pastor’s wife that’s fun and doesn’t care what people think about her. Denise writes, “Scarlett Jo hadn’t simply survived her life. She had learned how to live in spite of it- and not to worry too much about the perceptions of others.”
Scarlett Jo is fun loving, free spirited and an inspirational person! I loved her voice and her outlook on life she says, “Oh, child do you not know about couponing?...I’m feeding a pack of wolves at my house. If I didn’t know how to coupon, my children would have had to eat me by now. But if you ever want to learn how to do it, you just let me know. It is crazy girl! I can go to a store and leave and they’ve paid me money.” (I want to learn – teach me! Teach Me! Grin!)
The characters in this novel welcome you in as family. They’re situations will tug at your heart. What I love about Denise’s books are this, you’ll be having a good time reading then all of a sudden she cleverly interweaves spiritual truths that pierce your heart, make you stop and think. Denise will help you “See lies you believe.” You’ll laugh out loud and get teary eyed in parts of this story, a winning combination.
I really liked Scarlett Jo’s husband too he says, “I watch people. I take in people. And to be honest, I learn a great deal about them by what they don’t say.”
I highly recommend this novel and the non-fiction companion book called Reclaiming your Heart! It’s a win win combination. A book you’ll want to put on your summer reading list. Did I mention I just love the cover of this book too! It’s a keeper!
