And that's not to say that I disliked Lion-in fact, quite the opposite. This wonderfully shot and surprisingly effective film has a lot of good going for it.
It's interesting to see how far Dev Patel has come since his performance in 2008's Slumdog Millionaire. Lion showcases his acting ability exceptionally well-as his portrayal of Saroo is both moving and relatable. Saroo's situation in the movie is nearly unthinkable-though Dev Patel makes certain his talents aren't wasted. Nicole Kidman is also good in Lion as Sue-as is David Wenham who plays John. Some of the movie's best moments are admittedly during scenes which involve Kidman and Patel. Rooney Mara(Lucy) also makes for a charming co-star alongside Dev Patel in Lion.
Lion is both a fascinating story-as it is a tragic one. While there are scenes in Lion that I feel needed more detail, there is no denying how good it still is. There are definitely some themes that can be taken away from Lion and applied to life in general-but Lion's success as a movie comes from both the acting and the direction.
Saroo, a young Indian boy, becomes separated from his older brother Guduu. They live in a small room in an alleyway. Their mother lugs rocks for a living, these young boys steal coal from a train. A tough life, but they are well loved and care for each other. On this day Saroo goes missing, and after a long train ride finds himself 1200 miles from his home. He is put in an orphanage, and after a bit adopted.
Saroo finds a new life with wonderful people who become his parents. They live in Tasmania, and adopt another young boy who has some serious mental issues. However, love conquers all. We find Saroo at age 25, at college, training to be a hotel manager. And then, he begins his journey back to himself.
Such an emotional roller coaster, filled with twists and turns, and longing and love. A film that should be seen by all, it will open your heart. Dav Patel excels in this film, Nicole Kidman is also brilliant. The small Saroo, Sunny Prewar, is an amazing young boy. A film filled with heartache, but mostly love.
