The tracks don't go together super easily. My son definitely needs help with that. They can be downright stubborn and hard to push together even for an adult! My husband and I had to tag team! We bought additional track to expand his layout and I'm glad we did even though it's a bit pricey.
The bluetooth app is pretty buggy. It's easy to set up but hard to maintain a consistent connection via bluetooth. My son lost interest in using the app pretty quickly.
If you're not using smoke drops you have to have the smoke feature switched off. It's hard to remember to switch that off or top it off when the smoke runs out and I'm worried it will damage the engine if we forget. I could do without the smoke feature personally, but I do like that you can use it with or without, and the smoke does work well.
All in all I am very happy with this train set and feel like we got what we paid for. My son has been in train heaven! Thanks for making his Christmas, Lionel! Santa gets major points for this purchase. And yes, I purchased it for full price and didn't get it for free or at a discount for writing a review. Hope this helps somebody else!
This set can be bought for half the recommended retail price from a number of sources. It works very well and I found it very east to convert to dead rail and incorporated 4 X 18650 batteries in the tender. Everything works fine. The downside is not what Lionel tell you about the product but rather what they do not tell you. Firstly I think the announcements on this particular set are rubbish and it should be stated (on the packaging at least ) what they are. It seems that contrary to a You tube video statement, the announcements cannot be changed. So the announcement button on the handheld might as well be glued down. Secondly, they shout about the Bluetooth app and it appears that if you device does not have version 4.0 this app will not work. Thirdly the volume overall can be changed using the normal handset. This is not stated in any of the literature. If you press and hold down the announcements button with the speed controller in the center off position and then turn the speed control wheel clockwise the volume initially goes low and can be increased by increasing the speed controller clockwise. Then let go of the announcements button and turn the speed controller back to the vertical center off position. The volume will stay as you set it even if the locomotive are switched off and then on again at a later date. There may be other hidden options that I do not know of at this stage.
A few things that make this not a 5 star product:
The engine is not able to be controlled via a conventional transformer. Sure, it can be used with one to provide power, but the transformer needs to be set to max and you'd use the remote to control speed and make sounds. It is a shame that they don't provide a switch like on the LionChief Plus engines.
The announcement sounds are kind of childish. My kids did get a kick out of them though.
The idle engine noise also is also kind of distracting, its hard to not hear where the sound loop starts over.
The bluetooth did not work for me on android. It may have been my phone, but it was a hassle to get the app to see the engine, and the app was never able to successfully connect. If I cared about this feature more, I'd probably dock another star, but the remote is good enough.
Despite these short comings, I don't think you can go wrong with this train set if the price is right. It offers a nice oval of track, a good number of cars and a great running engine. If you find it on sale, it's a great buy.
This model is a decent size, you get the engine with four more cars, the engine has real smoke ring smoke stack, and there is a bell and engineer voice. The track was large enough to go around the tree and under a shelf. I would recommend this to anyone, except families with toddlers. We love it!
