Top customer reviews
First of all for the price [when it's on sale] is an excellent price because in the stores and other places online I've seen it going for between $230-$300. The engine and the cars are well built and the same quality as other Lionel trains unless you spend the REALLY big bucks on their higher quality items. I bought this to go around our Christmas tree this year because we've always talked about it and always wanted one. Growing up with Bachmann HO scale trains I always wanted to get a Lionel O scale set and when this went on sale for $160 I couldn't pass it up.
Here are a few things I learned about it if you are looking to put it around your tree. You might want to buy a piece of plywood to set your tree and track on because running the track on the carpet isn't a good idea at all. The track moves [which is normal unless you nail or screw the track down which is what you would do normally] due to the weight of the train which causes the tracks to separate a little which causes the train to lose connection and the train will stop. We bought a sheet of particle board/plywood for $9 at Home Depot and then went a step further and bought really thin green outdoor carpeting and wrapped it around the board and then screwed it in on the backside of the board to keep the carpet very tight and from moving. I believe we paid $10 for the carpet which was TrafficMaster brand and the style was Isla Vista - Color Topiary. Then we put the tree on the board and put the train track around the tree. I would recommend buying a few more straight pieces of track like the Lionel - FasTrack - Straight Track - 4 Pack if you want it to fit it around the tree better. Plus it's more fun to have a bigger track.
Here are a few things I found out about this set. For one it doesn't come with a real transformer to run other trains on. If you want to buy another engine and run it on this set you can't you'll need to buy a Lionel transformer like the Lionel CW-80 80-Watt Transformer and the track you connect the transformer to. As long as the transformer will run 18volts [not watts] you can run other engines on your Frosty set but you'll still need the remote to run your Frosty engine.
I've since bought 5 other train cars and added it to my Frosty set and the Frosty engine pulls it just fine.
In the video I've included you can see and hear how the train runs and how loud it is. The engine has two switches on the bottom of the train which you can easily get to without taking the train off the track. One of the switches is the "chuffing" sound switch which allows you to turn the "chuffing" sound on or off. And the "chuffing" sound is the Choo Choo Choo Choo sound trains make and the sound will speed up or slow down with how fast or slow you are running the train. And then the other switch is to turn the smoke maker off or on. When you have both the "chuffing" and smoke switch on at the same time the engine does a really good job at blowing a smoke ring with each "chuff" no matter how fast or slow you are going even in reverse.
As far as the other sounds they are operated from the remote. You have the whistle sound and the bell sound which in my opnion the bell sound is kind of annoying and when you push it the sound stays on until you push the button again and it kind of just cuts out when it stops. The last button is the announcement button which only makes the announcements while the train is stopped. Otherwise when the train is moving when you hit the announcements button it starts and stops the Frosty Theme song. And like everyone says the theme song sounds like it's on speed it's just too fast but it's not a deal killer by any means.
So let's get to the Pro's and Con's and let me say the Con's aren't a deal breaker by any means just a few things that could be better and are a "wee" bit annoying.
Awesome set for the beginner or anyone who has ever wanted a Lionel O Scale set.
VERY easy to set up and use
The whistle sound sounds great
You can turn the "chuffing" sound on and off from a switch.
You can turn the smoke on and off from a switch.
The Remote control allows you to run the train from anywhere in the room. I even ran it about 40ft away in the bedroom
You can expand on this set with just about any other Lionel product
Makes a great starter kit
You can't turn off the train/set without unplugging it or pulling the cord from the track [I solved this by buying a extension cord with a foot switch]
Frosty theme sounds like it's on speed
Bell sound is not smoothly implemented and just cuts out immediately when you stop it
Doesn't come with a regular Lionel power transformer to allow you to run other trains or accessories.
But with all that said I'd buy this set again in a heartbeat.
The remote control is pretty awesome and responsive
The whistle and Frosty theme are pretty loud (but when train going full speed the noise of the wheels/track drown it out)
The cars are durable and well decorated
The tracks connect together easily and are pretty firm
The base of the track sits on a low plush carpet and has no problem (doesn't need to be on plywood)
Light on the Engine and the Caboose are bright and add to the train experience
The larger box car didn't connect well but Lionel is sending replacement parts (so that is a pro within a con)
Small amount of track for such an expensive set, wish they added 2 extra straight 10" pieces
Smoke is not very noticeable, but it is under the tree, when I get more track to bring it out a bit it may help
