The story begins when Lionel moves to Penobscot, Massachusetts along with his family. He is left to his own devices and so he decides to explore around his new room while "pushing his glasses back up the whole time." That's when he finds the foot of `Three-Toed -Potbellied Walbaun'. Curious about his discovery, he finds out more about the Three-Toed -Potbellied Walbaun foot from an unlikely source - the town eccentric, Mr. Jardean. Once convinced that he really had something magical, Lionel decides to try out its power and thus begins his great adventure...
It's a charming story that is bound to capture the little hearts! (& some not so little ones - like mine!) The names that the author has come up with are also going to catch the attention of the kids who love the unique names or love to play with words. Best of all, it also teaches a lesson in guise of a story! My only regret is that I got an e-copy instead of a physical copy - I would love to see the accompanying pictures that are bound to make this book even more interesting for the kids.
Paul Hewlett writes with a sure touch for children, never talking down to them or preaching, but as Lionel often manages to get himself into trouble by taking the easy way out and using his magical "Walbaun" foot to grant wishes, parents can use Lionel's misadventures as a jumping point for discussions. Best of all though, this is an entertaining story, with lovable characters that children are sure to take to their heart. Highly recommended for schools & libraries, a delightful read for children and parents alike.
I hope the author is working on Lionel's next big adventure.
Well worth the little bit of money for the book! Great for kids and adults alike. Thanks so much for a great book I can feel good about reading to my kids or having them read them to themselves. Good Job!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and particularly liked the magic weaved by the Three-toed Pot-bellied Walbauns, which never quite worked the way it should, but always seemed to achieve the right results. This book is extremely well-written and very readable and held my attention throughout. With its well-constructed text and its light touch, it has all the right ingredients for the intended reader; originality, humour, a touch of magic, a likeable hero, and, above all, a sound lesson in how to treat others. `Do unto others as you would have them do unto you' - The Golden Rule.
I think parents could read this aloud to younger children whilst enjoying it themselves, and those old enough to read will have no problem. Either way, it is an excellent book.
I highly recommend Lionel's Grand Adventure (Lionel and the Golden Rule) for children aged 5 to adult. I will certainly be reading more of Paul Hewlett's books myself, in the future.
