"Apparently you have been wanting to write an SF trilogy with queer people savingthe world and romance present but as a secondary storyline (I'mparaphrasing, but I believe I got the gist of it correctly). And I said to myself - sign me up - because this sounded like just my cup oftea..." - A Dear Author Recommended Read and starred review.
"Beecroft has penned an adventure-filled utopian science fictionromance, anopposites-attract love story that also interrogates issuesof gender andbodies, all with intelligence and a healthy dollop ofhumor. WhileLioness of Cygnus Five will never be mistaken for hard SF,it does giftits readers with an engaging balance of extrapolativethought-experimentand unexpected romance." - Romance Novels for Feminists

The main characters are great: I am completely in love with Captain Campos, she is spectacular. The other main character, Bryant, is a surgeon and bioengineer who is really likable as well. All the side characters are super fun as well, and I'm looking forward to seeing them in the sequels. I honestly can't wait to see what happens next.
The writing is good, very few word processing mistakes, and a few non sci fi terms I had to look up. One glaring 1.5 page copy and paste duplication, that was annoying.
That was my initial response, but rereading in a few years later, I'm much more taken with it. I love the idea of these two people from very different world views, coming to see each other clearly. And I liked the nano bots, so sophisticated they could be magic, and Aurora, our lioness, no sleeping beauty but a dazzling fighter and a woman struggling with her beliefs. Happy to recommend. Off to buy book 2
I could write more, but others have done sat. Only, when you read the book, the words spring out to you and you are thre with her.
Great writing, great concept.

I thought her two main characters were really good. Complex, believable and - each in their own way - mildly terrifying. I certainly wouldn't want to be locked on a ship with either of them, let alone both, if they were angry with me! I particularly liked how Bryant and Aurora reversed the usual male and female roles, without being made inferior as a man or a woman by the text. Aurora's experience in the middle of the book, and her violent revulsion to it, only reinforced her femininity.
The title to my review isn't a joke, BTW. It's not often I read a book and think "this needs to be a film", but I did this repeatedly while reading this book.
Opening your mind to differences, conquering your fears and blindness, acceptance...this is what this book is about.
I've travelled the same journey as its characters, beginning just as stubborn and blind as them, so yes, I am glad to have read it. :)
