I have loved tomatoes and tomato soup since I was little. My mom would hand me a can of Campbell's and send me off to walk to the babysitter, to eat before I went to kindergarten. I always ate the whole can's worth.

Now I am a nearly-retired engineer, working in an office many miles from home. My wife of 34 years sends me off with things for my lunch. When there isn't Lipton Tomato Cup-A-Soup in the bag, I reach into my bottom file drawer and pull one out of my own stash. The coffee machine makes the hot water for mixing it on the spot, and I love it as much as I did in 1957.

It's not a fine restaurant, it's my desk. It's not gourmet soup in a beautiful china bowl, it's Cup-A-Soup in my coffee cup. But it's tomato.

I love most Lipton soups and the convenience of making them in the microwave oven in 1 1/2 minutes is fantastic. They are a healthy alternative to coffee or soda. And yes there are some vitamins in it as apposed to coffee or soda. This is made in Canada and is all natural with no preservatives which is a good thing.

I recently purchased the Lipton Chicken Noodle with White meat " My favorite " and the Lipton Spring Vegetable which was also quite good. Since the other ones where so good for an instant soup I thought I would try the Tomato soup also. Unfortunately the Tomato soup was disappointing. I guess it's a matter of taste but it seemed to sweet for me and did not taste natural. It has 13 grams of sugar which equals about 3 teaspoons of sugar, a lot for a small 6 ounce cup of soup. The salt content is quite high also but since I have no problem with salt it's not a major problem for me. I probably will use the remainder of my soup for cooking since I don't care for it as a soup.

I have never added sugar to tomato juice or a fresh tomato to make it taste better so I don't understand why they do it here. I can understand salt or even lemon juice I do it all the time, but not sugar.

I am sure some people would disagree with me and might even like it sweet but this is my opinion. It's unfortunate that you have to buy a case instead of 1 or 2 to just try.

I was amazed when this product virtually disappeared from grocery shelves some time ago. I was even more amazed to see this product reappear in multiple box cartons available from Amazon.com. I love the idea of a soup made by adding water. All those little hydrated, fancy plastic "carton" and "jug soups" require a microwave. Cup-a-Soup only needs very hot water from thermos or hot water pot. An envelope slips into purse, daypack or pocket. Those who find the product "watery" are probably using too much water. A regular size cup should be 3/4 full of water--no huge mugs or oversized cups. The soup is creamy smooth, and tasty. It does not have the slightly bitter "bite" of some canned tomato soups. It is helpful as a caserole ingredient--especially if used for extending quantity or adding a tasty liquid instead of water. Whenever a delicious sauce is needed, I spoon prepared soup over meatloaf--or add the soup dry to meatloaf ingredients or spaghetti sauces. It is just a very low tech product, with modern convenience and hundreds of uses.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I keep these in my desk drawer for those times when I don't have time to do anything else. It's decent for a pouch soup, better than most others I've tried, and easy to make via the water cooler hot water spout. I haven't ordered them for a while on Amazon and I am now having trouble finding them. Where'd you go Lipton?

Well, I've had reservations about telling people about this recipe for fear everyone would know my secret, but here goes. Mix one packet of Lipton Tomato Cup-a-Soup mix with one pint sour cream. No big deal, but tastes great! This is best when served with fritos, BBQ potato chips, and regular potato chips. It is a family favorite, and the entire extended family loves the recipe. Since our local stores haven't carried this soup mix for many years, we take turns ordering it by the case for shipment from the factory or now, from Amazon. We divvy up the boxes and give them for Christmas, that's how much our family loves this dip!
