Editorial Reviews
Liquid Spirit marks Gregory Porter's Blue Note Records debut, which arrives on the heels of two critically acclaimed indie label albums that quickly propelled Porter to the upper echelon of contemporary male jazz singers and earned him two GRAMMY nominations. Don Was, President of Blue Note, encouraged Porter to stay true to his artistic vision. I firmly consider myself a jazz singer but I enjoy blues, southern soul, and gospel, Porter says, Those elements make their way inside my music. And I've always heard them in jazz.

This is my second purchase of Liquid Spirit because my first copy, ( from a different seller ), has major distortion on my favorite song, which is Water Under Bridges. I am so relieved that this copy is and sounds flawless!! Gregory Porter has the type of voice that reaches the soul and his material is very thought provoking, with tons of emotion. This album is the digital slayer for me. If you buy this and prefer digital afterwards, well I think you need to get your ears checked. But that's just my subjective opinion. Lol

This is Gregory Porter's greatly anticipated third album and his first on Blue Note. For his first, "Water", he received a grammy nomination in the category of Best Jazz Vocal. His second offering, "Be Good" gained him a grammy nomination in the category of Best Traditional R&B. With his third, "Liquid Spirit" maybe he'll get nomination in two or three categories because even though he is known as a jazz singer, you cannot deny his strong roots in R&B, Blues & Gospel.
Many people have compared him to the likes of Sam Cooke, Bill Withers, Otis Redding, Lou Rawls, Les McCann, Johnny Hartman and of course, Nat King Cole. Why do we search for a comparison? I can only think it's because the authenticity & intimacy in his voice and lyrics, makes us happy & comfortable and familiar only because it's like we are listening to an old friend...A friend we have known for many years....we know this guy...he is US.
It has been said that jazz is a powerful, living, breathing art form that uplifts, connects and transforms us. In my opinion, that is just what he does. He can transform his sounds into something new, yet familiar. His lyrics communicate specific emotional, spiritual and intellectual life, with an approach of perfect pitch and all wrapped up with a whole bunch of soul.
Some of the highlights for me are "No Love Dying" and "I Fall In Love Too Easily" beautifully telling us that mistakes in love may be where pain comes from but ultimately it is also the source of great joy. "Lonesome Lover" written by Abbey Lincoln & Max Roach, never got the play that it deserved and Porter keeps the song's integrity but makes it new and now, maybe it will be included in the Great American Songbook (where it belongs). "Musical Genocide" tells us how we cannot forget music's past. "The In Crowd" and "Movin'" take us back in time, kickin' it old school, and making us smile in contentment. "Liquid Spirit" is a hand clapping, goin' to church, testifying, rockin' song that if you don't feel good after hearing it, you better call the undertaker, because you must be dead! And most importantly, "When Love Was King", with lyrics that have a "Nature Boy" vibe but also for me, I thought of Ellington's "Is God A Three Letter Word For Love", in it's intent. Some critics might find it sappy but I found it to be a beautiful melody with a very poignant yet hopeful lyric.
And like the good friend that we feel he is, he has kept his great personnel with him from his previous recordings. If it's working, don't mess up a good thing! And it's quite apparent that he shares a sibling like simpatico with collaborator & pianist, Chip Crawford, who adds so much to this album.
The rest of the personnel are all standouts too. They are, Yosuke Sato, Alto Sax; Tivon Pennicott, Tenor Sax; Aaron James, Double Bass; Emanuel Harold, Drums.
The only thing that could have made this even better is if it were a "live" performance because after all in jazz, it's the "for the moment" sets that jazz is all about.

Every now and then an album comes along that changes the way you listen to music. Maybe it introduces you to a different genre or maybe it forces you to appreciate technical achievements. For me, artists like Bela fleck, the avett brothers, Phil keaggy, john prine, branford Marsalis, David bowie, lake street dive, etc. have created those albums. I don't generally listen to jazz vocalists, but I do listen to a wide variety of genres, and I am open to everything. When I heard Gregory porter the first time I was immediately impressed. But when I heard liquid soul on tidal the first time I went straight to Amazon and bought a vinyl copy. That has never happened to me. I cannot recall ever becoming an almost instant fan of an artist, but I did that day. I cannot imagine any fan of any genre not liking this album. If you genuinely love music, you will fall in love with liquid soul by track 2. With all the crap out there, do yourself a favor and buy a great album.

I had heard this artist before and his performance was impressive. This CD however is a bit disappointing. The entire CD is quite bland and it gives you more of a "Sing along effective without the words". You must be a fan to appreciate this artist. This is not an item that will be rated with my favorites.

Gregory Porter’s distinctive image in a balaclava and his velvet-wrapped-gravel voice arrests and transports us. Three covers are all impressive. Contracting with Blue Note might put him in “The ‘In’ Cloud.” Miles’ favorite, “I Fall In Love Too Easily” would be a great gift to us. Throughout his 12 originals he has much to say. Firm resolution to life is passed along from his songs. He abuses emptiness of pop-culture. He will not commit nor will not submit to “Musical Genocide.” “When Love Is King” is gently allegorical. Are we just pushing time? Or is time pushing us? “Time Is Ticking.” He rings an alarm, it’s not to late. To be free. Get be free. He recalls of his parents in “Free.” His father paved a road so his burden is lighter, while his mother was dropping love just like rain. She said guard his heart for from it come the issues of life. The people are thirsty ‘cause of man’s unnatural hands. He peps us up by singing let the “Liquid Spirit” free.
He sings undulating feelings of hope, as there will be “No Love Dying” there for him. Facing death of love being everywhere, he swears he won’t let it be. He cries his lover left it all with him in “Wolfcry.” When he saved her is the start of his agony. She gained her strength, left her innocence and vulnerability with him. He explores more desperate heart ache in “Hey Laura.” Something bothering makes him to ring her doorbell so late. When she’s “Moving” in the wrong direction. He wished his Momma was there. She would know, what to do, what to say, how to pray to make things better. Why didn’t he know that she was an essential part of him? He depicts wistfully dejected mind in “Brown Grass.” Memories so strong, it keeps him from moving on. In “Water Under Bridge,” some one told him to get over it. “Wind Song” tells durability of love as he loves her still and always will. If his song repeats, know that he’s stuck on her. His songs put us inside the music. His longtime working band support him marvelously.

Simply superb

The best version of an awesome album. Those in the know, know Blue Note records don't release anything not up to their ridiculously high standards, so even if you don't know Mr Porter (you should) you can be assured that this album is no run of the mill offering.
The runaway track here is "Liquid Spirit" a no nonsense song about the greed of man (read capitalism) that deprives people of their basic needs like water. Even if you're a dance aficionado you will have heard this track thanks to the excellent house reworking by Claptone which is also included on this Deluxe Edition.
So I've written paragraphs and only mentioned one track so far. I could go into details about the melancholy blues genius that is Water Under Bridges, the perfectly arranged cover of The In Crowd or the other 15 or so tracks (there are 19 presented) but all are just superb.
If you have a decent stereo state this disc will make your stereo shine. Those of you into Blue Note jazz may have noticed that original recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder has been painstakingly digitally remastering a lot of the back catalogue to get the best from CD format. This disc will never need that. Every detail in the bass, cymbal etc is presented and every hammer strike in the piano carries a meaningful emotion. Combined with Porters earthy vocal timbre you have an amazing record. Buy it and enjoy the brilliant album.

Pour a drink, put on this album and relax

What a wonderful album.
No matter what you're doing when you put it on, it just makes you stop and listen.
Firstly the quality of the recording seems excellent to me, close your eyes and you can almost see the band around Gregory Porter.
The band accompany his buttery smooth vocals beautifully, not pulling attention away from his voice but playing with enough flair to make you smile at their artistry in every song.
Do yourself a favour, if you're feeling stressed, pour yourself a drink of your choosing and put this album on. The stress will just melt away.

This is my first Gregory Porter album and I loved it, played it so many times now. It is a great introduction to him, his fantastic voice, Jazz and the sound of wonderful instruments that I haven't paid much attention to in the past... However as great as this recording sounds and it is a very good recording the vinyl was filthy and required careful cleaning before I would let it anywhere near my precious stylus. Therefore it loses a star.. the album though is highly recommended especially if you are like me and just starting to dip your toes into the Jazz scene..

Outstanding and Unique Blues-Soul Album with Stunning Acoustic Clarity
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 1, 2015Verified Purchase
There are a fair number of reviews that say this album is not as good as previous ones, but for me this is an all time classic.
The sound is more Blues-Soul than Jazz which is where the problem possibly lies with the purists, but the superb “stripped back acoustic” sound makes this a very intimate listen. Close your eyes and on a decent system this guy is right there with his band a few feet in front of you, delivering a pitch and note perfect performance with nowhere to hide.
There are few albums where when you want to sit back with a glass of wine and unwind that you don’t end up reaching for the skip button for some of the tracks… but this is one of those rarities. Gregory reaches inside your mind with an honesty that is rare with so many over-produced albums these days.
So for me Gregory … lets have more of this… it’s unique and refreshing…and transcends your earlier mainstream jazz albums.

Liquid Spirit.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 13, 2017Verified Purchase
US singer Gregory Porter has a sumptuous, soulful, quicksilver voice; he makes it all look so effortless and easy. ‘Liquid Spirit’ was Porter's debut for Blue Note and is polished and confident from his warm baritone voice, and it has a title track that is a real gospel swinger. But for me, it's the funky groovers on which he sounds most at home, such as ‘Free’, and the wonderful 1960’s hit ‘The In Crowd’. Porter has great rhythmic phrasing and he is diverse and refuses to be categorized by jazz, gospel, soul, or R & B. One must also mention Porter’s commanding, heartfelt delivery on "Hey Laura" he is relaxed but utterly sincere in his delivery. The way he and his band, and one must mention his band, move through blues, jazz, gospel, and R&B shows such great musical skill and rich talent.
